pitcherTitle: The Pitcher

Author: William Hazelgrove

Genre: Fiction/Sports

A boy with a golden arm but no money for lessons. A mother who wants to give her son his dream before she dies. A broken down World Series pitcher who cannot go on after the death of his wife. These are the elements of The Pitcher. A story of a man at the end of his dream and a boy whose dream is to make his high school baseball team. In the tradition of The Natural and The Field of Dreams, this is a mythic story about how a man and a boy meet in the crossroads of their life and find a way to go on. You will laugh and you will cry as The Pitcher and Ricky prepare for the ultimate try out of life.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

As a fan of baseball, I enjoyed The Pitcher. What kid wouldn’t want a former MLB pitcher as a neighbor? You realize quickly that this particular pitcher, however, lived his dream when he pitched in the World Series but something went seriously wrong with his life between then and now.

The Pitcher isn’t just about him though. It’s told through the eyes of his young neighbor, Ricky, who is of Mexican heritage and dreams of being a pitcher for the Cubs. Ricky has a lot on his plate: a sick but headstrong mother, an abusive deadbeat father, and having to face prejudice. He also has a wild pitch that may prevent him from realizing his dream if he can’t get it under control.

You can’t help but fall in love with Ricky and his mom. They go through a lot but they hang in there together and draw the Pitcher into their family as well.

This is a great book not only about baseball but about growing up and chasing your dreams. I definitely recommend The Pitcher.
