My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Giovanni’s aunt gave him Jasper, a special parrot. Initially, I thought Jasper was special because he could carry on a conversation but it was much more than that. He was able to make Giovanni and his aunt small enough to ride on his back so he could take them places!

One Sunday, when Giovanni’s friends are coming over, his aunt tells him that they’re having rice and beans which is a traditional Jamaican meal. Giovanni is mortified. He calls the beans rocks and gives them to the dogs.

Jasper and Giovanni’s aunt take him the the places of his friends’ ancestors to show him that they have traditional rice and bean dishes too.

Rice and Rocks is beautifully illustrated and teaches children about some traditions of different places. It shows that even though we’re all different, maybe we’re not as different as we think! This is a great book for children and a good one for reading aloud to young children.
