There’s an interesting article about independent bookstores. When I had a bookstore I only sold used books. I looked into having new books available for my customers but couldn’t compete with the big stores and online. This article explains the reason very well:

Needless to say, there were many reasons we decided to close the bookstore part of our business but this is one of them.
