Two Year Anniversary of the Joplin Tornado

22 May

Two years ago today, at 5:41 pm, an EF5 tornado changed the lives of the residents of Joplin. What started out as a happy day, graduation day for many, turned out so differently than any of us could have imagined. I am so proud of the residents of Joplin and how they responded to this tragedy, especially my family members. Whether it was a lost home, a damaged home, or helping others in their time of need, I truly have an amazing family. I’d also like to thank the thousands and thousands of volunteers who continue to help Joplin rebuild.

We have said from day one that we were happy that all we lost was the store. We still had our home and not one person in my family was hurt. We are truly blessed!

Here’s a video from the Joplin tornado. Our store is on here from 2:34-2:40.

My heart goes out to the people of Moore, Oklahoma.

So Many Books!

1 May

tumblr_me9w8uM73X1qfeom9o1_500I went to a couple big book sales this past weekend and bought a few hundred books. They’re mostly books that will sell in the store rather than online. Then I got a phone call yesterday from a lady who wanted to sell me some books rather than putting them in a garage sale she’s having next week. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse: 6 big boxes of books for $25. A few of them were common ones that I didn’t really care about but there are some good hardcovers by Dean Koontz, Nicholas Sparks, and a few other popular authors. Later in the day I received a phone call from another lady whom I’d made an offer to on some books a month or so ago and she decided to take my offer. Today, I had a couple bring in a bunch of current textbooks that I had to buy. I buy books all the time and I’ve always got a lot of books to go through to put online and get out on the shelves but all of a sudden I’m a bit overwhelmed! My office can’t take one more box!

After we lost our store in the tornado in May 2011, in which I had over 100,000 books, I told my husband I was going to be pickier about the books I bought and I wouldn’t have as many in the new store. I kept half that promise: I am being pickier about my purchases; but it is so difficult to keep the books from multiplying! I just can’t pass up a good deal! I’m drowning in books! I’m not complaining, though. I love what I do!

World Book Night is Tuesday

20 Apr

Hi res WBN logo 2013

Most of the boxes of books have been picked up by book givers. How exciting! Some of the locations that books are being given out at on Tuesday are hospitals, schools, libraries, and even a concert that just happened to be scheduled for Tuesday night. I can’t wait to hear back from all of the book givers. I’m sure they’ll have some interesting stories. Below are a few of the people who picked up their books today:

It’s Spring!

It’s finally that time of year! The garage sales, yard sales, and church sales are starting up everywhere. Missouri’s biggest annual garage sale is this weekend in Neosho, Mo. I don’t go to it because there are wall to wall people and cars. I find that it’s much better to go to other sales in this area. I stopped at a church sale on the way to work this morning and felt like a kid in a candy shop! I found 34 books to buy. Now I have to get busy putting them online today before I leave. If anyone runs across any good book sales in the Southwest Missouri area, I’d appreciate a heads up.

World Book Night is Almost Here!

Hi res WBN logo 2013

I am excited to be a book giver again this year during World Book Night. My bookstore is also a pick up point for other book givers. I’m looking forward to hearing their stories after they give out their books.

Last year I gave out The Hunger Games and the response was very positive. This year I chose Bossypants by Tina Fey. It’s a big difference from what I gave out last year but I think it will be a good one to encourage people to read.

You can get more information about World Book Night on their website.

And So It Begins…

11 Mar

Don’t you love books? The excitement of finding a new book, the smell of an old book, or the feeling of accomplishment (and sometimes sadness) upon completion of a book.

I’ve been selling books since 1999, and I’m finally jumping into the world of blogging. This blog is all about books. I’ll post anything I find that’s interesting or fun. I’ll have book reviews, personal notes about my travels to book expos and sales, and stories written by a couple unknown but talented writers.

The book reviews will mostly be about new books that are just being published. I reserve the right, though, to review old favorites from time to time. Also, I judge romance novels twice a year so, although that’s not my favorite genre, I’ll be posting reviews of them. In fact, I’m in the process of reading those now so the first 2 reviews will be romance novels.

What would you like to see?
