Description: Dear World, From Joplin With Love, was a project sponsored by Spiva Center for the Arts and Freeman Health System. It was an art exhibit featuring photographs of Robert X. Fogarty of people who were affected by the Joplin tornado as well as first responders, volunteers, and city officials who expressed their feelings in a unique way. This book contains all of the photographs that he took as well as stories of many of the people.

I own a bookstore in Joplin, MO, and was approached by Spiva Center for the Arts to sell this book for them. Of course I had to check it out before I put it on the shelf for sale. The first couple of pages have some photos of the damage from the tornado as well as messages from the photographer, Robert X. Fogarty,  the president and CEO of Freeman Health System, Paula F. Baker, and the Executive Director of Spiva Center for the Arts, Jo Mueller. They explain how the art exhibit and the book came to be.

There are also some survivor stories at the beginning of the book which are still heart-wrenching for me to read. I know it helps the survivors to tell their stories, and many people find them interesting to read, but it’s still difficult for me. The rest of the book is devoted to interesting photos of people who were involved with the tornado in some way, whether as survivors, volunteers, or workers. I found it inspiring to see the messages these people brought to the pages, and in such a unique way: written on their bodies with marker.

Dear World from Joplin with Love is an inspirational work of art. It gives all of us, whether affected by the tornado or not, messages of hope and examples of the human capability to carry on. You can find this book at on  Amazon.
