Book Review & Giveaway: Kill and Run by Lauren Carr

Kill and RunBook Description

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a town home outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

I just finished reading Three Days to Forever by Lauren Carr, which I really enjoyed, so I was looking forward to reading Kill and Run. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the characters in this book were also in Three Days to Forever. Murphy Thornton and his new wife, Jessica, were married at the end of it and it is now just 4 months later.

Kill and Run has a  Cast of Characters listed at the beginning which is helpful since there are a lot of characters. I only had to refer to it once or twice, but I think it’s a great idea. I wish more authors did that. I love Lauren Carr’s characters! Murphy and Jessica had only known each other for 48 hours before they got married and they still have a lot to learn about each other, but their marriage is solid. And he’s smart enough to listen to advice from his father.

There are a couple murder mysteries to solve and some interesting twists, as well as a lot of action toward the end. It’s also obvious that Lauren Carr is an animal lover. The Thornton and Faraday families have their fair share of quirky pets!

I definitely recommend Kill and Run. If you like mystery, intrigue, and action, it’s one you don’t want to miss.

With time running out to the big day, Mac Faraday and Spencer’s small police force have to sort through the clues to figure out not only who has been targeted for assassination, but also who is determined to stop everything … FOREVER!

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the first Mac Faraday novel I’ve read but it definitely stands on its own. That’s not to say I won’t go back and read the previous ones. I like Lauren Carr’s writing style. It’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The dialogue is especially enjoyable.

There are a lot of characters in Three Days to Forever so there is a Cast of Characters listed at the beginning. I thought that was a great idea even though I only had to refer to it once or twice. I like Mac Faraday and his fiancee, Archie Monday. They’re celebrities whose wedding is going to be the event of the year. The pre-wedding week is a disaster, including everything from a murder to a hair mishap, but they take it all in stride (for the most part). Archie’s “disasters” tickled me.

Several of the characters were unbelievably talented at survival and assassination skills but it made for a good story. Mac definitely has some interesting friends!

My favorite character has to be Archie’s mother, Agnes. She’s 70, stubborn, and capable of keeping up with the big boys. On top of that, she’s good at putting Mac in his place. What a woman!

I definitely recommend Three Days to Forever. If you like mystery, intrigue, and action, it’s one you don’t want to miss.

Review:

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Sinners, Survivors, and Saints, book #2 in the Boulton Quest Series, is a young adult book that starts a few months after Book #1, Brothers, Bullies, and Bad Guys.

This book is almost as action packed as the first book. Chris and Michael are good friends with Katherine and Thomas, who helped them in Brothers, Bullies, and Bad Guys. They have worked hard at setting up a surveillance company out of their new fancy barn built by the boys’ parents. But Robert Cain isn’t done with them just yet and when Michael makes a dumb move, their lives are at risk once more.

Katherine and Thomas are main characters in book #2 along with Chris and Michael. All 4 are very close and would do anything for each other. Michael is much more mature now…he’s not perfect but he’s much better and a likeable character.

I definitely recommend Sinners, Survivors, and Saints especially for young adults but it’s a good action story for adults as well. It’s another quick and easy read that’s action packed. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Review:

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Brothers, Bullies, and Bad Guys is a good young adult story with a lot of action. It’s about Chris and Michael, brothers who have practically raised themselves because their parents are so busy at their lab. Chris is 14 and feels responsible for Michael and also feels guilty that he can’t keep Michael under control. Michael is 12 and a hellion. He’s even done things that have caused Chris to have to be hospitalized. He’s a bully at school and is an all around bad kid, a hooligan.

After the boys’ parents disappear, they have to work together. Chris learns that there is much more to Michael than meets the eye. As the story progresses, Michael does some growing up and realizes what a jerk he’s been.

Brothers, Bullies, and Bad Guys is a quick, easy read that is action packed. There is also some violence but less than we see on TV every day. It has a little romance and a lot of growing up. This is a great book for young adults.
