My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Eva Grayzel wrote this book after she had cancer because she felt that it would have been great if her children had had a book like it. It is meant to help children to deal with cancer in someone they care about. It’s well-written, and the video below is of her reading M.C. Plays Hide & Seek. She has so much energy and good vibes as she reads it (and yes, I did notice that it’s backwards).

M.C. Plays Hide & Seek tells children that it’s important to share their feelings by talking, drawing, or in writing. It doesn’t matter how, it’s just important to do it! Also, no feelings are “wrong.” Some may feel sad while others feel angry. It’s even possible to not feel anything at first because of the shock of it all.

I like that feelings are discussed, but I also think explaining that cancer can hide in the body for a long time and that it can affect any organ in the body is also important. There is so much that adults don’t think to explain to children when they’re dealing with a serious diagnosis. Also, the different types of doctors are defined. Some of those doctor names can be so long and confusing, it’s nice to know what the adults are talking about!

Finally, in M.C. Plays Hide & Seek there are pictures of people having a good time because kids need to know that they and their loved one can still have fun together. Cancer won’t stop that!

For parents, at the end of the book is a Quick Reference Guide about things that were discussed. There’s also a section about why to tell children about the diagnosis, and I think it is absolutely right: children are intuitive and will know something is going on, sharing will minimize their fears, hiding your diagnosis promotes secrecy, anger and resentment.

I definitely recommend M.C. Plays Hide & Seek for children who have a loved one with cancer.

Book Review: My Story for God’s Glory by Deborah Luke

This is my story of how I came to believe and trust in Jesus and what that has since meant in my life. It is about finding purpose in our lives, peace in the valleys and hope in the midst of hardships.

My Review

Debby Luke is married to my mom’s cousin, and we see her and her husband, Jahn, occasionally (not often enough). They are the nicest couple I have ever met, and they’re the kind of people you can sit and talk to for hours.

When Debby asked if I wanted to read her book, of course I said yes. I then put it on the bookshelf with all of the other books on my TBR list and sadly forgot about it…until yesterday. Once I started reading My Story for God’s Glory, I wasn’t able to put it down.

I knew Debby has had some health problems, but I had no idea how much she’s gone through! Sharing her thoughts throughout her journey is inspiring, and I feel blessed to have learned more about her. What a woman! I don’t think anyone can read this book and not see what a faithful servant Debby is and how awesome God is, even when He doesn’t answer our prayers how we want them answered.

About the Author

Debby lives in Englewood, Ohio, with her husband, Jahn, and their two cats. They have two grown children. Debby is a retired Special and elementary education teacher but continues to work with children in a private tutoring practice. She enjoys spending time with friends and family and spending quiet times with God.

Book Review: 19 Marigold Lane by R.M. Gilmore

Meanwhile, back in Flintlock…

Prudence, recovering from surgery, refuses to let one busted wing stop her from exposing Sheriff Floyd, falling in love with her odd boy, and finding out who the hell moved in down the street.

I, Prudence Penderhaus, rescued a boy, uncovered a murder, and opened a can of conspiracy worms that downright refused to go back.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I read 17 Marigold Lane and was looking forward to reading 19 Marigold Lane, the next book in the Prudence Penderhouse series. I like Pru and her neighbor Cassius and their acceptance of each other’s quirkiness. I especially like the way the author depicts Asperger syndrome in a realistic and relatable way.

Pru just had surgery to remove a tumor from under her arm and although she should be staying in bed and resting, she can’t help but worry about Cassius because he’s alone in his house. She still believes that she could die soon, so she has decided to do what she wants and to speak her mind. Some of the things that come out of her mouth are pretty funny.

She also feels the need to find something to prove that the sheriff is dirty. How is that possible when she’s fighting cancer? Not only that, but her mom is concerned about the way Pru is living her life. Rather than being supportive like she was in the last book, there is now a lot of friction between them.

Cassius keeps hearing strange sounds coming from the new neighbor at 19 Marigold Lane and he’s afraid. Everyone saw boxes being carried into the house but no one has seen anyone come in or out of the house since then. What is going on there?

19 Marigold Lane contains well-formed characters, loyal friends, hope, despair, mystery, and conflict. It was difficult to put down, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Book Review: 17 Marigold Lane by R.M. Gilmore

In a town like Flintlock, Prudence Penderhaus was a freak. A weirdo. A loser of epic proportions.
That was until one word changed her life, and the town of Flintlock, forever.
When a moment of long-awaited courage brings her to the porch of the town-dubbed spook house, uncovering an odd boy no one knew existed is only the beginning.

My name is Prudence Penderhaus.
I’ve never done anything remarkable.
Never even bothered to look up.
Until the day I found out I was dying.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve read most of R.M. Gilmore’s books so 17 Marigold Lane was not exactly what I expected but it was amazing! I especially like the way she depicted Asperger syndrome in a realistic and relatable way.

I was hooked from the beginning. Poor Pru just found out that she has cancer and believes that she’s going to die. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, she decides to make the rest of her life count. Pru’s sudden bravery not only changes her life but the lives of many people in Flintlock, especially the family at 17 Marigold Lane.

17 Marigold Lane contains well-formed characters, hateful classmates, loyalty, hope, despair, mystery, and a few twists. What more could you want? It’s a book that’s difficult to put down, and I can’t wait to read the next book, 19 Marigold Lane.

The story is uplifting and often humorous while symbolizing hope. It will make readers of all ages laugh, cry, and remember their own childhood and the relationships and events that influenced who they have become. The goal of this story is to help children through health crises in their family. The illustrator, editor and designer donated their time to help with the project in order to make possible the donation of copies of the book to waiting rooms of cancer clinics.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Nana and the “c” is written from the perspective of a 7 year old. Madison and her little sister find out that her grandma has breast cancer and they learn about the side effects of chemo including hair loss. Nana is very good at alleviating their fears about cancer and teaches Madison that it doesn’t help to worry. It’s more important to appreciate the wonder of our life.

Even though this book is a good one for children to read if they’re dealing with a friend or relative who has cancer, it’s also a good reminder for adults to focus on the important things in life. I think it’s an amazing idea to donate copies to hospitals and children’s centers.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Mama’s Knight is a wonderful book that I wish never had to be written. It’s a guide for parents and their children when Mom is diagnosed with cancer. What makes it special is that it not only explains to children what may happen but it is also personalized.

The illustrations are cute and colorful and the text is simple enough for children to understand what is going on with their mom.

It’s never easy to talk about cancer, especially to children, but Mama’s Knight is a great tool to open that conversation. It also has activities for the child and parent to do, so it can be used over and over as a resource for activity ideas. And what a great keepsake for children!

Themamavillage.com is listed at the end of the book and is a website that has love and support for Mom.
