Dead Reckoning

Description

Indiana, January 2010.

It’s a hot summer’s day in 1984 when twelve-year-old Gilly and her friend Sally find a dead new-born in a shoebox in the cemetery of their tiny town. Deciding to keep their discovery a secret, they bury the body in Gilly’s yard.

The results are disastrous. Flowers are mysteriously left on strollers. Two local children disappear and end up dead. A suspect is arrested and confesses, blaming the deaths on the girls’ having taken the dead baby.

Gilly grows up but is haunted by what’s happened. As a young woman, she flees the town and its memories, going all the way to Japan.
Returning with her Japanese husband Toshi to attend her mother’s funeral, Gilly finds the past is not past. She’s threatened, and someone is putting flowers on strollers again.

When another child is abducted, Gilly knows she must discover the truth about what happened all those years ago before more lives are lost.

Guest Review by Sal

Sally and I found a dead baby girl in a box in the cemetery. She’s pretty. She looks like Cassandra.”

Told through flashbacks to both 2010 and 1984, ‘Dead Reckoning’ by Lea O’Harra is the kind of novel that makes you say “Oh!” aloud when everything finally clicks into place. The main character of this story, Gillian, is an American expat living in Japan who returns to Indiana to attend her mother’s funeral. Gillian has a strained relationship with her family, specifically her mother and older brother, Nick, and she has not been back to Indiana for many years. However, there are two reasons that she hasn’t returned. Not only does she struggle to get along with her family, but, at the age of 12, Gillian was somewhat involved in solving two local child murders and seeing the guilty party sent off to prison for life.

You might think that would make her a hero in her small town of Byron and to some people there, you’d be right. But to others…well, you’ll have to read the story to find out.

The last thing that Gillian expects upon returning to Byron is to find out that the man who committed the murders is now free and that the strange events that preceded the murders have begun happening again around town.

While dealing with the death of her mother, the bullying of her older brother and the ending of her marriage to her husband, Toshi, Gillian begins receiving threats that make one thing very clear: there are certain people who do not want to see her back in Byron, Indiana.

I don’t want to spoil anything else, because you need to read this one yourself to find out what happens! I read this book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down! O’Harra’s writing shines as well as her character development.  The flashbacks are easy to follow and oh, the plot! The plot and its pacing are exquisite!

Praise and Awards

Praise Dead Reckoning by Lea O’Harra

“Both a drama and a thriller, full of twists and human insight.”-Thomas Waugh

“The immediate declaration of past events,  the discovery and concealment of the dead baby, provides a gripping start to this book.
The story is simple yet powerful, immediately drawing the reader into a world that identifies the challenges of growing up in a small town in Indiana.
The book tackles the casual racism that is often overlooked, with great clarity. Although this is a crime novel it is also a powerful story about how a single childhood event can influence the future.
It compels you to share the history and become part of the small-town network. Through a nexus of characters, we see how relationships that are made in our formative years, affect our lives.
The story is more than a crime novel. It also serves to gives a fascinating insight into life in a small town in the USA, through the eyes of somebody who never really wanted to return.”-ReallyPoshScouser, Amazon

Praise Lea O’Harra

“Lea O’Harra offers us a whodunnit set in a Japan labouring under the weight of cultural imperialism, a country where the characters find that their friends and lovers are really strangers  and imperfect ones at that…-Nick Sweet, author of the Inspector Velázquez series

’With her deep knowledge of Japanese culture, superb writing, and sensitivity to human foibles. O’Harra has crafted a cross-cultural whodunnit sure to please Japanophiles and mystery lovers alike.”-Suzanne Kamata, author of Losing Kei

Awards Lea O’Harra

Autumn 2017 “Lady First” was awarded ‘finalist’ status in the crime fiction section of the Beverly Hill Book Awards.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Kay Hunter and her team are called when a body is found floating in the river. When they find the scene of the crime, there are a child’s things there. They have to assume it’s a murder and a kidnapping. As the team investigates, they deal with false leads, several twists, and some shady characters. Will they find the child and the murderer? And are they one and the same?

This series is about the same investigative team, but each case is quite a bit different. Detectives come and go but they remain strong. I like Kay Hunter and the members of her team. She’s intelligent, strong, and dedicated and her team members are supportive of her and each other, and they are close enough that they know each other well.

Rachel Amphlett has a great writing style, and Alison Campbell does a good job with pace and enunciation. I like the fact that the same person narrates all of these books.  Cradle to Grave is a detective mystery with an interesting and surprising end. If you like crime fiction, this is a must read. I’m looking forward to more Kay Hunter books.

My Review

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free copy of the audiobook. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I’ve read several of Lauren Carr’s books including the first Chris Matheson novel, ICE. I enjoy her books and I like how the characters from different series are intertwined.

Chris Matheson’s wife Blair died overseas, and he has moved on and is dating his childhood sweetheart, Helen. On what is supposed to be a special date night, Chris sees his dead wife! He follows her but instead of catching up to her, he kills a hitman who was after Blair. Now Chris and the Geezer Squad are on the case along with Murphy, a character from another of Lauren Carr’s series.

Winter Frost is fast-paced and full of action and mystery. The characters are great, especially Chris’s mom, Doris, and his dog, Sterling. Doris is one of a kind and takes matters into her own hands when she needs to, sometimes with hilarious results. Sterling is a smart dog and can even change radio channels and win at card games.

I like the narrator. He’s narrated a lot of these books (if not all). He’s got a good voice and has good pace and timing.

If you like a good mystery with unique characters, a lot of action, humor, and a touch of romance, you’ll enjoy this book. Even though it’s the second book in a series, it stands on its own.

My Review

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve read quite a few of Lauren Carr’s books but this is the first one with Chris Matheson. He is retired FBI and he and his three daughters have moved back to his childhood home. Even though he’s retired, he’s quickly involved in a couple of cases. One is a cold case that affected him years ago and the other is a recent case that his ex-boss has asked him to keep on top of because she’s on bed rest.

ICE is a fast-moving novel. There are plenty of clues to both cases. Chris even has help from his dad’s old “book club.” Most of them are retired from law enforcement and they actually look into cold cases rather than read books. They’re more than happy to help Chris with research on his cold case.

I like the characters in ICE. Chris is an all around good guy but my favorite characters are his mom and his dog. Chris’s mom, Doris, is a force of nature. He recently got his dog, Sterling, who is a retired police dog. He’s great! He can open a car door and change a radio station among other things. What a character!

If you enjoy a good mystery with twists, humor, and a little romance, you’ll enjoy ICE.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. This is the fourth Kay Hunter book that I’ve listened to and I’m enjoying the series.

Kay Hunter and her team are called when a body is discovered in the trunk of a car that was in a serious accident. When they find out that the car belongs to Kay’s nemesis, she’s hopeful that he’ll finally be caught and go to prison. As they investigate, they uncover more than they could ever have guessed.

Kay is strong although her husband’s on a business trip so she’s alone at night and that makes her jumpy which is understandable.

I’ve been waiting since the first book for this story line to end and it was worth the wait. Everything comes together and a few things that happened in the first 3 books are now clear. This book does stand on its own, but it’d be better to read the first 3 if you can.

Rachel Amphlett has a great writing style and the narrator does a good job with pace and enunciation. It’s a difficult book to put down. Hell to Pay is a good detective mystery with a couple of surprises.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. This is the third Kay Hunter book that I’ve read and I’m enjoying the series.

Kay Hunter and her team are called to investigate the murder of Sophie, a teenage girl who was from a prominent family. She was supposed to get engaged to Josh Hamilton but instead, she was murdered. As they investigate her murder, the list of suspects continues to grow.  Was there anyone who really knew Sophie? The secrets Kay and her team uncover seem to suggest otherwise.

I like Kay Hunter. She’s intelligent, strong, and dedicated. Her boss is difficult to work for but she knows what she’s doing. She doesn’t always follow the rules, but she tries. She continues to focus on the case she’s working on even when she knows that someone is watching her. She’s not sure why and she’s hoping she can get to the bottom of it at some point, but first, she needs to find a killer.

Rachel Amphlett has a great writing style and the narrator does a good job with pace and enunciation. Between the two of them, it’s difficult to stop listening to the story when I have to do something else (like talk to my husband).

One to Watch is a detective mystery with a good twist at the end. I recommend it if you like crime fiction. It’s the third book in the series, but it does stand on its own. I’m looking forward to listening to the book number 4!

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Will to Live is the second book in the Detective Kay Hunter series. I listened to the first book, Scared to Death and liked it so I was looking forward to listening to this book as well.

When a man is hit by a train, a witness tells the police that he was tied to the tracks. Detective Kay Hunter’s team starts investigating the murder and realizes that there were other deaths by train that were ruled suicides but were actually murders. Can the team catch the murderer before another death occurs?

I like Kay Hunter. She’s intelligent, strong, and dedicated. Her boss is difficult to work for but she knows what she’s doing. She’s also determined to prove that she was set up in the past when she almost lost her job.

Rachel Amphlett has a great writing style and the narrator does a good job with pace and enunciation.

Will to Live is a detective mystery with a good twist at the end. If you like crime fiction, this is a must read. I’m looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Guest Post

Rachel Amphlett’s Favourite Books in the Crime Fiction Genre

I think, like many crime thriller authors, my love of the genre started when I was about five years old and started reading the famous five series by Enid Blyton.

By the time I was in my very early teens, I was working my way through my mum’s collection of Dick Francis books and adding to those each birthday and Christmas when I received book tokens in lieu of presents. On top of that, every time my parents stocked up their bookshelves via jumble sales, I’d be devouring the likes of Ed McBain, PD James, and Robert Goddard. By the time I left school, I’d devoured most of the crime fiction section in my secondary school library, including books by Ken Follett, Agatha Christie, and Michael Crichton.

To this day, I’m unable to walk past a secondhand bookshop…

So, what’s the attraction to this genre as a reader?

For me, it’s a mixture of entertainment and escapism.

There’s nothing like perusing the shelves in a bookshop or library, spotting a cover or a spine of a book, and then reading the blurb and thinking “I’ve got to read this”.

The opening chapter is probably the most important part of a crime thriller for a reader. The anticipation of lifting the front cover and reading that first line, then the second, then turning the page, and then getting completely sucked into the mystery via an opening scene that leads you stunned is second to none.

You know (with a few exceptions) that the villain will be apprehended by the time you reach the last page, the detective will have solved the mystery, and all will be right with the world, but it’s the excitement between the first page in the last and trying to work out who the bad guy is, or how they will be stopped, before the detective does.

I have to admit, although I do like reading (and writing) stand-alone crime thrillers, I do enjoy reading books in a series because you get to know the detective over a period of time. You begin to appreciate what drives them. For instance, take Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch series. That character has grown so much since first appearing in The Black Echo, and I think that’s what keeps the series fresh. It’s not just about the investigation of murder in each book, it’s how the main character’s life is changed by the investigation and the world around him.

It’s the same reason why I enjoyed reading all the Val McDermid Tony Hill series, and the Roy Grace series by Peter James – as well as the fact that the stories aren’t just about the main characters, but include a regular supporting cast.

As a crime thriller author, I’m re-reading a lot of the books on my shelves through different eyes these days – I find I’m analysing them more, trying to pinpoint exactly why those stories have endured.

I hope by re-reading the masters, my own writing will continue to grow.

It’s also a great excuse to forget the housework for a while…

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I read the first three books in this series (Hero, The Antelope Play, and The Monkey House) over the past couple of weeks and I’ve enjoyed them but Necessities is my favorite Donnie Ray Cuinn book so far.

What’s interesting is that Donnie Ray Cuinn doesn’t appear in Necessities until about halfway through the book. The first half is the journal of David Lewis and it describes how he got to where he is right now: on trial for the murder of his wife’s lover.

Donnie has made a good life for himself in the panhandle of Texas. He’s turned out to be a good lawyer and ends up defending David Lewis even though Lewis could afford any lawyer he wanted.

The characters are interesting. Donnie has matured since the first book and isn’t the jerk he was. David Lewis is a war hero and double amputee. He gets involved with Cordelia Lehrer, whose father is very rich and rather quirky. David passes muster with Cordelia’s father and they end up getting married. But he has some surprises ahead of him.

I read this book in one sitting because it was difficult to put down. I had to find out what happens. It has a couple twists that I didn’t see coming and the ending is perfect. I definitely recommend Necessities and it does stand on its own.

Meet the Author

BOYD TAYLOR lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and their Havanese dog Toby. Necessities is the fourth novel in the Donnie Ray Cuinn series. In a former life, Boyd was a lawyer and a corporate officer. A native of Temple, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in government and an LL.B. from the law school.

Boyd’s first novel “Hero” was prescient in its story about fake news. His second novel, “The Antelope Play,” dealt with drug trafficking in the Texas Panhandle, an unfortunately accurate forecast. The third, “The Monkey House”, involved commercial development of a large green space in the center of Austin, all too familiar to Austin residents. Whether his upcoming novel “Necessities” predicts future events with the accuracy of the earlier books remains to be seen.

In 1948, Vienna was divided among four powers: France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Jack Marshall had served with Walker during the war, and now, working together for The Company, they are tasked to do the inconceivable. Could former Nazis really be recruited to assist the U.S. in the atomic race? As their team moves forward, they quickly discover they are not the only ones looking for these men. And the others in the search may just have the objective of murder.

In this tale of historical noir, of corruption and deceit, no one is who they say they are. Who is The Good Man in a world where an enemy may be a friend, an ally may be the enemy, and governments deny everything?

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I read The Roma Series by Gabriel Valjan and I liked it so I was looking forward to reading The Company Files: The Good Man.

The Company Files: The Good Man, like the Roma series, is not light reading. It is an international thriller based in Vienna in 1948, post World War II. There’s a lot of history included in the story which makes it all the more interesting.

Walker and Jack Marshall work for The Company trying to recruit former Nazis to assist America in the atomic race. Unfortunately, there is a vigilante who has other ideas. He is killing former Nazis and some of those are on the list of recruits who Walker and Jack are looking for. Can they come to an understanding and possibly work together?

As I would expect from this author, there are many other things happening while the main plot carries out. For example, the vigilante saves a young girl who has nowhere else to go. What will happen to her? And then there’s Leslie who works with Walker and Jack and has many skills. She even infiltrated the Nazis and got a lot of important information during the war. But because she’s a woman, her skills are seldom acknowledged.

Anyone who enjoys historical fiction, international spy thrillers, or suspense will enjoy The Company Files: The Good Man. It’s not only interesting as far as the history but the characters are well developed and it has a good ending.
