Epilogue of The Coast-to-Coast Murders by James Patterson and J.D. Barker

**SPOILER ALERT**

After posting my review of The Coast-to-Coast Murders, I received several emails asking me to explain the epilogue. I realized that there were two possibilities, and I had a feeling that the authors wrote it that way so that everyone would be wondering. I was right!

I asked J.D. Barker to please enlighten us, and this was his response:

Hello there!

I think you nailed it – we purposely want people to walk away those two exact thoughts:

– Did Dr. Rose fake her death in order to continue her work with Megan?
or- Did Megan imagine the entire thing?

As you can imagine, I’m not ready to share the answer just yet and if I did, Jim might send a hit squad after me 🙂

Feel free to share this with your readers.

Best, jd

I appreciate his quick response even if we don’t have an answer yet. Does this mean there’s going to be a sequel??

Book Review: The Coast-to-Coast Murders by James Patterson and J.D. Barker

There’s a killer on the road, and nobody is safe.

Michael and Megan Fitzgerald are siblings who share a terrifying past. Both adopted, and now grown — Michael is a long-haul truck driver, Megan a college student majoring in psychology — they trust each other before anyone else. They’ve had to.

In Los Angeles, Detective Garrett Hobbs and FBI Agent Jessica Gimble have joined forces to work a murder that seems like a dead cinch. Their chief suspect is quickly identified and apprehended –but then there’s another killing just like the one they’ve been investigating. And another. And not just in Los Angeles — the spree spreads across the country. The Fitzgerald family comes to the investigators’ attention, but Dobbs and Gimble are at a loss — if one of the four is involved, which Fitzgerald might it be?

From coastal California to upstate New York, Dobbs and Gimble race against time and across state lines to stop an ingenious and deeply deranged killer — one whose dark and twisted appetites put them outside the range of logic or experience.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from J.D. Barker through NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

J.D. Barker is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read most of his books, and when I have the chance to read another one, I get so excited! I haven’t read any James Patterson books in a few years, but I was happy to see them team up. I’m hoping J.D. Barker gets more exposure, which he richly deserves.

The Coast-to-Coast Murders is like being on a roller coaster, and at the end, I was dumbfounded. There are so many twists and so much going on, it is one of those books I kept telling myself, “One more chapter… One more chapter.” There are times I can just ignore everything in my life and read a book from beginning to end; unfortunately, I have too many deadlines at the moment. I couldn’t wait to get back to my book!

The characters all appear to be normal people until you look behind the façade. There’s all kinds of crazy there. Detective Garrett Hobbs and FBI Agent Jessica Gimble have their hands full figuring out who is committing these murders and if they’re random killings or if they’re connected somehow. How many more murders will there be before they figure it out?

If you liked The Fourth Monkey or just like page turners with suspense and twists, I definitely recommend The Coast-to-Coast Murders.

Spoiler Alert: Confused about the ending? Aren’t we all! Check out my post about the epilogue.

Book Review: Forsaken by J.D. Barker

When horror author Thad McAlister began his latest novel, a tale rooted in the witch trials of centuries past, the words flowed effortlessly. The story poured forth, filling page after page with the most frightening character ever to crawl from his imagination. It was his greatest work, one that would guarantee him a position among the legends of the craft.

But was it really fiction?

He inadvertently opened a door, one that would soon jeopardize the lives of his family.

She wants to come back.

At home, his wife struggles to keep their family alive. Secretly wondering if she caused it all…a deal she made long ago. A deal with the Forsaken.

My Review

J.D. Barker is one of my favorite authors, so I bought a copy of his first book Forsaken. The other books of his that I’ve read are mystery/suspense and this one is horror, so I knew it’d be different.

Thad is a bestselling horror novelist. He has a journal that his wife gave him at the beginning of their marriage. He writes his novels in it, and the stories just seem to come to him. Eventually, it becomes apparent that these stories aren’t fiction, but historical; and the results of Thad writing them will affect not only his family, but the future of mankind.

The chapters alternate between Thad’s most recent novel, The Journal of Clayton Stone, and the present. This is the kind of horror I like: “normal” people who end up in extraordinary circumstances. His writing reminds me of Stephen King, and, in fact, Needful Things is mentioned at the beginning and end.

Forsaken is a suspenseful, crazy page turner. It’s impressive that this was J.D. Barker’s first book. If you like horror, you will like Forsaken.
