My Review

I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read quite a few of Lauren Carr’s books and this one brings together a lot of the characters from different series. They’re all related in one way or another and the men decide to go on a fishing trip while the women go to a mystery writers’ conference to accept an award for Mac Faraday’s deceased mother. It seems that a murder occurs wherever these characters go so it just seems natural that there would be a murder but in both places? That’s crazy (but fun for us readers).

As usual, there are murders to solve and the main characters are up to the task. They get along well and there are some interesting conversations that include humor and wit. I love the dogs! They have such great personalities and although they’re well behaved for the most part, Gnarly is a bit of a thief.

I like how Twofer is narrated. A man narrates during the fishing trip and a woman narrates during the mystery writers’ conference. Both do a great job with timing and pronunciation.

I definitely recommend Twofer and it does stand on its own. If you listen to the audiobook, I would recommend making a list of the characters. The books usually contain a cast of characters because there are so many. The list isn’t needed after reading several of Lauren Carr’s books, but someone listening or reading for the first time would probably need one to keep everyone straight.

After months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

My Review

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I have read several books by Lauren Carr including Kill and Run in which Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are the main characters so I was looking forward to listening to this book. Before the Thorny Rose Mysteries, I read several Mac Faraday Mysteries. Mac Faraday is Jessica’s father so most of the characters in these books feel like old friends.

I like Lauren Carr’s writing style. It’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The dialogue is especially enjoyable. There are quite a few characters in this book but they’re easy to keep track of, although that may be because I know so many of them from previous books.

Poor Jessica Faraday is having nightmares which turn out to be repressed memories. Her nightmares are getting more disturbing and violent so she and her husband Murphy Thornton decide to go to the town where she may have witnessed a murder when she was 10 years old. What they find are some disturbed people and despite several twists, they’re able to solve the mystery. But they come across so much more in the process.

The narrator, C.J. McAllister, does a great job narrating the story. He changes his voice just enough so that I could tell who was talking, which I imagine was a challenge with so many characters. He has a good voice for narrating and does a good job with clarity and pace.

This is definitely a book that will keep you guessing and I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. It will also stand alone without reading the previous books, but the Faradays and their friends and family are great!

Book Review & Giveaway: Kill and Run by Lauren Carr

2 Sep

Kill and RunBook Description

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a town home outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

I just finished reading Three Days to Forever by Lauren Carr, which I really enjoyed, so I was looking forward to reading Kill and Run. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the characters in this book were also in Three Days to Forever. Murphy Thornton and his new wife, Jessica, were married at the end of it and it is now just 4 months later.

Kill and Run has a  Cast of Characters listed at the beginning which is helpful since there are a lot of characters. I only had to refer to it once or twice, but I think it’s a great idea. I wish more authors did that. I love Lauren Carr’s characters! Murphy and Jessica had only known each other for 48 hours before they got married and they still have a lot to learn about each other, but their marriage is solid. And he’s smart enough to listen to advice from his father.

There are a couple murder mysteries to solve and some interesting twists, as well as a lot of action toward the end. It’s also obvious that Lauren Carr is an animal lover. The Thornton and Faraday families have their fair share of quirky pets!

I definitely recommend Kill and Run. If you like mystery, intrigue, and action, it’s one you don’t want to miss.
