My Review

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read several books by Lauren Carr including Kill and Run  and A Fine Year for Murder in which Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are the main characters so I was looking forward to listening to this book. Thorny Rose Mysteries contain some of the same characters as the  Mac Faraday Mysteries. Mac Faraday is Jessica’s father so reading these mysteries are like a continuation of those. They all fit together and are fun to read.

I like Lauren Carr’s writing style. It’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The dialogue is especially enjoyable. There are quite a few characters in this book, as in the other Thorny Rose Mysteries but they’re easy to keep track of because I know so many of them from previous books. If I were a new reader, I’d probably have to keep a list of them in order to not get confused.

Murphy and Jessica have only been married about a year but now that she’s in school, they’re having a rough time trying to find together time. When Murphy is picking up pizza for dinner one night, he runs into an old buddy and they decide to meet the next morning because his friend wants to talk to him about something. Just as Murphy gets to the park, his friend is shot and killed. Suddenly, he and Jessica are embroiled in mystery and murder. And then Murphy disappears. Will they find him in time?

The narrator does a good job narrating the story.  He has a good voice for narrating and does a good job with clarity and pace.

Murder by Perfection is a page turner and is another fine whodunit that will keep you guessing and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. It will also stand alone without reading the previous books, but I suggest reading the books in order.

Book Description:

Question: what do you get the man with everything?

Answer: when that man is the heir of the late mystery writer Robin Spencer, retired homicide detective Mac Faraday, you get him a cold case to solve.

In Shades of Murder, Mac Faraday is once again the heir to an unbelievable fortune. This time the benefactor is a collector of stolen art. But this isn’t just any stolen work of art – it’s a masterpiece with a murder attached to it.

Ilysa Ramsay was in the midst of taking the art world by storm with her artistic genius. Hours after unveiling her latest masterpiece, she is found dead in her Deep Creek Lake studio, and her painting is nowhere to be found.

Almost a decade later, the long lost Ilysa Ramsay masterpiece has found its way into Mac Faraday’s hands and he can’t resist the urge to delve into the case.

A world away, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, former JAG lawyer Joshua Thornton agrees to do a favor for the last person he would ever expect – a convicted serial killer.

The favor: solve the one murder wrongly attributed to him.

Joshua finds an unexpected ally in Cameron Gates, a spunky detective who has reason to believe the young woman known to the media only as Jane Doe, victim number four, was the victim of a copycat. Together, Joshua and Cameron set out to light a flame under the cold case only to find that someone behind the scenes wants the case to remain cold, and is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Little do these detectives know that the paths of their respective cases are on a collision course when they follow the clues to bring them together in a showdown with a killer who’s got a talent for murder!

My Review

I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read several books in the Mac Faraday series and they all stand alone and they’re all good mysteries. Shades of Murder is full of mystery with a little humor on the side. It is the third book in the series. I’m enjoying the books even more as I read the series in order.

I like Lauren Carr’s writing style because it’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The narrator, Mike Alger, is easy to listen to. He has good timing and a pleasant voice.

The characters become more developed and complex as the series continues. Gnarly, Mac’s dog, is definitely my favorite character even if he is a thief! Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates, who have their own series, begin their relationship in this book. That’s another series I enjoy!

I have read and listened to several of Lauren Carr’s books. I’ve decided that for some reason, I like listening to the Mac Faraday books more than reading them. I did miss the cast of characters that is usually in the written or electronic books this time though. There was a time or two that I couldn’t remember who a character was and I had to listen for a bit to figure it out.

I definitely recommend Shades of Murder especially if you enjoy a good murder mystery.

18 Oct

Book Description

Never tell Mac Faraday not to do something.

Spencer’s police chief, David O’Callaghan, learns this lesson the hard way when he orders Mac Faraday to stay away from the south end of Spencer’s mountaintop – even though he owns the property. It doesn’t take long for Mac to find out what lies on the other side of the stone wall and locked gate, on which hangs a sign warning visitors to Keep Out!

Topping the list of the 10 top haunted places in America, Astaire Castle is associated with two suicides, three mysterious disappearances, and four murders since it was built almost a century ago – and Mac Faraday owns it!

In spite of David’s warning, Mac can’t resist unlocking the gate to see the castle that supposedly hasn’t seen a living soul since his late mother had ordered it closed up after the double homicide and disappearance of Damian Wagner, a world-famous master of horror novels.

What starts out as a quick tour of a dusty old castle turns into another Mac Faraday adventure when Astaire Castle becomes the scene of even more murders. Mac is going to need to put all of his investigative talents to work to sort out this case that involves the strangest characters he has run into yet – including a wolf man. No, we’re not talking about Gnarly.

My Review

I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author.

I have read several Mac Faraday books and have enjoyed them all. This one is my favorite so far. I didn’t pay attention to what installment The Murders at Astaire Castle was and somewhere along the line, I realized that this book occurred before some of the others I’ve read. Once I realized that, it was fine because I learned some of the history of the characters that I hadn’t known before.

The Murders at Astaire Castle is full of mystery and non-stop action. There are always a lot of characters in Mac Faraday novels, but the more of them I read, the easier it gets to keep them all straight. Gnarly, Mac’s dog, has to be my favorite character. He is cute, loveable, and so funny! I could just picture him dumpster diving!

I like Lauren Carr’s writing style because it’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The dialogue is especially enjoyable. The narrator, Dan Lawson, did an excellent job keeping all of the voices separate. The only thing I’d suggest is that if he does any more of these that he make David sound a little less wimpy. He’s definitely not a wimp but somehow that is how his voice came across (but I could still tell him apart from everyone else which is most important).

I definitely recommend The Murders at Astaire Castle. I thought I had this one figured out but it has a couple surprises. Best of all, even though it’s part of a series, it stands on its own. If you like audiobooks, this one is done well. I enjoyed listening to it in my car.

Book Review & Giveaway: Candidate for Murder by Lauren Carr

5 Sep

2016-09-05_10-02-30

It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is not a pretty one. In recent years, the small resort town has become divided between the local year-round residents who have enjoyed their rural way of life and the city dwellers moving into their mansions, taking over the town council, and proceeding to turn Deep Creek Lake into a closed gate community—complete with a host of regulations for everything from speed limits to clothes lines.

When the political parties force-feed two unsavory mayoral nominees on the town residents, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement—by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, to run as mayor of Spencer!

What starts out as a joke turns into a disaster when overnight Gnarly becomes the front runner—at which point his political enemies take a page straight out of Politics 101. What do you do when you’re behind in a race? Dig up dirt on the front runner, of course.

Seemingly, someone is not content to rest with simply embarrassing the front runner by publicizing his dishonorable discharge from the United States Army, but to throw in a murder for good measure. With murder on the ballot, Mac Faraday and the gang—including old friends from past cases—dive in to clear Gnarly’s name, catch a killer, and save Spencer!

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This is Lauren Carr’s twelfth Mac Faraday novel, and only the third one I’ve read but it definitely stands on its own. When I have time, I plan on reading the previous ones. I like Lauren Carr’s writing style because it’s easy to follow, and I especially like the dialogue.

There are a lot of characters in Candidate for Murder but there is a Cast of Characters listed at the beginning which is a great idea. I like Mac Faraday and his wife, Archie Monday, and I love Mac’s dog, Gnarly! In fact, this book is about Gnarly.

Chief of Police and Mac Faraday’s half brother, David, is watching Gnarly while Mac is out of town. David is so disgusted with the two candidates running for mayor of the small town of Spencer that he signs Gnarly up as a candidate. He’s immediately a hit and way ahead of the other candidates in the polls.

This is the best Mac Faraday novel I’ve read so far. It’s hard to figure out who the bad guy is, or the worst guy. When politics is involved you never know what’s going to come up. And when Gnarly runs for mayor, they even try to dig up dirt on him.

I definitely recommend Candidate for Murder.  It has great characters, mystery, intrigue, and lots of humor.

Book Review & Giveaway: Three Days to Forever by Lauren Carr

Three Days to Forever

Book Description

In this latest Mac Faraday Mystery from best-selling mystery author Lauren Carr, readers will embark on a rollercoaster adventure with old friends (including the Lovers in Crime team of Prosecutor Joshua Thornton and Homicide Detective Cameron Gates), but also meet new ones as Mac Faraday’s daughter Jessica Faraday and Joshua Thornton’s son Murphy Thornton join the team in the race to get the love birds to the altar!

With three days left to the year, Deep Creek Lake is hopping with holiday vacationers and wedding guests pouring into the Spencer Inn for Mac Faraday and Archie Monday’s huge wedding ceremony which is being touted as the social event of the year.

But droopy flowers and guests who failed to RSVP are the least of Mac’s and Archie’s problems when a professional hit squad hits Spencer Manor to send the groom, Joshua Thornton, Archie’s mother, and Gnarly running for their lives.

With time running out to the big day, Mac Faraday and Spencer’s small police force have to sort through the clues to figure out not only who has been targeted for assassination, but also who is determined to stop everything … FOREVER!

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the first Mac Faraday novel I’ve read but it definitely stands on its own. That’s not to say I won’t go back and read the previous ones. I like Lauren Carr’s writing style. It’s easy to follow and she doesn’t get bogged down with lengthy descriptions. The dialogue is especially enjoyable.

There are a lot of characters in Three Days to Forever so there is a Cast of Characters listed at the beginning. I thought that was a great idea even though I only had to refer to it once or twice. I like Mac Faraday and his fiancee, Archie Monday. They’re celebrities whose wedding is going to be the event of the year. The pre-wedding week is a disaster, including everything from a murder to a hair mishap, but they take it all in stride (for the most part). Archie’s “disasters” tickled me.

Several of the characters were unbelievably talented at survival and assassination skills but it made for a good story. Mac definitely has some interesting friends!

My favorite character has to be Archie’s mother, Agnes. She’s 70, stubborn, and capable of keeping up with the big boys. On top of that, she’s good at putting Mac in his place. What a woman!

I definitely recommend Three Days to Forever. If you like mystery, intrigue, and action, it’s one you don’t want to miss.
