Book Review: Girl on the Run by Carolyn Arnold

Shivers tear through her, but she must be brave—for herself, for her future. She grips her coat tighter and steps into the night and the cold, pouring rain. Never to be seen again.

An ordinary Monday morning commute turns deadly when a gunman opens fire in the local train station. Detective Madison Knight rushes to the scene, but she’s too late for the victims. Two women were fatally wounded, including an expectant mother, and one is fighting for her life. But it’s the face of one of the dead that has Madison seeing a ghost from her past. She looks just like Madison’s college friend Courtney Middleton, who vanished over fifteen years ago. If it is her, where has she been all these years, and does her resurfacing have anything to do with the shooting?

Eyewitnesses say that a young woman triggered the incident, but both the shooter and the girl seem to have evaporated into thin air. Mounting evidence suggests they may be part of a drug-trafficking operation, the girl being one of their runners. But Madison’s not so sure the girl is the hardened criminal she appears to be.

As Madison races to track down the young woman, more people turn up murdered, and there’s still no sign of the girl. Is her body out there to find or is she on the run? If the latter, is it due to fear or guilt? Could it simply be that the shooting victims were caught in the crosshairs of organized crime? Madison’s not sure, but she can’t shake her niggling suspicion: what if it was something more than that?

An absolutely gripping and addictive crime thriller. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan, and Rachel Caine.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve read several of Carolyn Arnold’s books, and the more I read, the more I enjoy them. Girl on the Run is the eleventh book in the Madison Knight series. I haven’t read all of the books in this series, but they each stand alone.

I find it interesting that I like this series because Madison is not my favorite protagonist. I like when characters are flawed because they’re more realistic, but Madison tends to be a little too aggressive and even rude, and her partner, Terry, often has to smooth things over. She’s also obsessed with the mob and although they often have a part in their cases, she tends to want to pursue that avenue first. Despite Madison’s flaws, she’s fiercely independent and talented and gets the case solved.

I recommend this exciting police procedural especially if you enjoy murder mysteries with many suspects and a plot twist or two.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

This is the ninth book in the series but it’s the just the second one I’ve read. I read the eighth book, Power Struggle, so I already know the characters a little. Shades of Justice does stand on its own though. When things from the past come up, enough backstory is given so that the story is easy to follow.

Detective Madison Knight is assigned to solve the double homicide of the wife of a wealthy businessman and a man that no one can identify. Of course her boss wants Madison to walk on egg shells when around the family because he doesn’t want the police department to lose the family’s contributions. This just adds to the conflict between the two because Madison is determined to do her job no matter what.

Madison is also having a journalist look into some cops who she thinks may be dirty. She can’t do it on her own because she can’t be found investigating these people, especially since they could be tied to the mafia.

On top of everything else that’s going on, Madison’s best friend is getting married in just a few days. She has a lot on her plate and even though she’s focusing on the case and doesn’t spend any time with her boyfriend, he’s still supportive when she needs him. And she needs support because even the wedding is a major source of stress for poor Madison.

Shades of Justice is a detective murder mystery with a lot of suspects, a cold case, a few twists, and a touch of romance. What else can you ask for? I look forward to reading the next Madison Knight book whether I go back and read the 1st one or go on to read #10.

NEW RELEASE…

One hit man who’s back for revenge.

One detective who’s not going down without a fight.

It’s been ten months since Detective Madison Knight almost died at the hands of Russian Mafia hit man Constantine Romanov. She hasn’t seen hide nor hair of him since he escaped police custody and fled to Russia soon after his arrest, except now her latest murder investigation gives her reason to believe he’s back in town. Seeing as the victim is the man who killed her grandfather, her perspective may be a little skewed, but with the MO smacking of Constantine and the victim’s connections to the mob, she finds it hard to be objective. Still, she’s doing her best to consider all the evidence.

When she receives a threatening letter from Constantine, however, her suspicions are confirmed. And he’s made it abundantly clear that not only does he plan to finish what he started but he has her family and loved ones in the crosshairs, too. Madison vows to do whatever it takes to save them, but as the hours race by, the body count rises. And the stakes only get higher when Madison’s sister, Chelsea, goes missing.

Now, Madison’s only play is to take Chelsea’s disappearance for what it really means: Constantine is calling Madison out for one final showdown. And they won’t both survive…

This is the eighth book in the series but it’s the first one I’ve read and although I like to read series in order if I can, Power Struggle does stand on its own. When things from the past come up, enough backstory is given so that the story is easy to follow.

Detective Madison Knight is assigned to solve the murder of the man who killed her grandfather. Although she’s not sad to see that he’s dead, she is concerned because his murder looks the same as one by Constantine. He nearly killed her the last time he was in town and she’s afraid that he’s going to try to finish the job. And then she finds out that’s exactly why he’s back…

Power Struggle is full of suspense and action. Madison and her family are in danger and her situation seems impossible. I’ve read several of Carolyn Arnold’s books and have enjoyed them all and this one doesn’t disappoint.
