My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read quite a few of Lauren Carr’s books, and I’m never disappointed. Although she writes several different series, most of the characters are related in some way. Since the family is getting ready for a wedding in this book, several of the characters from other series are in this book.

The Root of Murder is the fourth book in the Lovers in Crime series. I have read the first three books, so I was looking forward to reading this one. This is my favorite book in the series so far. The cases that Cameron and Joshua are working on become so intertwined that they might as well be working on one big case.

Solving two murders and a disappearance is a big part of the book, of course, but the Thornton family’s story is just as entertaining. It’s obvious that Joshua has done a good job raising his children. They’re all responsible and in good, loving relationships.

I definitely recommend The Root of Murder. It has murder mysteries involving people Joshua and his children have known all of their lives. That means extra drama, and there’s always a little humor here and there. I even caught myself laughing out loud once. Thankfully, I was at home at the time. I’m looking forward to reading the next Lovers in Crime book.

Book Review & Giveaway: Real Murder by Lauren Carr

When Homicide Detective Cameron Gates befriends Dolly, the little old lady who lives across the street, she is warned not to get lured into helping the elderly woman by investigating the unsolved murder of one of her girls. “She’s senile,” Cameron is warned. “It’s not a real murder.”
Such is not the case. After Dolly is brutally murdered, Cameron discovers that the sweet blue-haired lady’s “girl” was a call girl, who had been killed in a mysterious double homicide.

Meanwhile, Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton is looking for answers to the murder of a childhood friend, a sheriff deputy whose cruiser is found at the bottom of a lake. The deputy had disappeared almost twenty years ago while privately investigating the murder of a local prostitute.

It doesn’t take long for the Lovers in Crime to put their cases together to reveal a long-kept secret that some believe is worth killing to keep undercover.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read quite a few of Lauren Carr’s books, and I’m never disappointed. Although she writes several different series, most of the characters are related in some way. So, even when I start a new series, I usually know a little bit about one or more of the characters.

Real Murder is the second book in the Lovers in Crime series. I recently read the first book, Dead on Ice, and I like reading series in order when I can, so I was looking forward to reading this one.

Joshua Thornton and his new wife Cameron are once again involved in a case. An old friend of Joshua’s disappeared several years ago, and his body is finally found. Joshua makes it his mission to find answers. At the same time, Cameron is working on another case involving the murder of a sweet old neighbor. The way these cases end up being intertwined is clever.

The murder mysteries are interesting, but the relationship between Joshua and Cameron is also an important part of Real Murder. They’re newlyweds but they do have their moments. They got married without a big wedding which is causing some friction with Joshua’s adult children. Joshua and Cameron do a good job at making things work even if sometimes it takes them a little while to figure things out. Lauren Carr does a great job of making the characters “real.”

I definitely recommend Real Murder. Along with the mystery and drama there is a little suspense and humor. I’m looking forward to reading the next Lovers in Crime book.

Book Review & Giveaway: Dead on Ice by Lauren Carr

Dead on Ice is the first installment of Lauren Carr’s new series (Lovers in Crime) featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates.

Spunky Cameron Gates is tasked with solving the murder of Cherry Pickens, a legendary star of pornographic films, whose body turns up in an abandoned freezer. The case has a personal connection to her lover, Joshua Thornton, because the freezer was located in his cousin’s basement. It doesn’t take long for their investigation to reveal that the risqué star’s roots were buried in their rural Ohio Valley community, something that Cherry had kept off her show business bio. She should have kept her hometown off her road map, too—because when this starlet came running home from the mob, it proved to be a fatal homecoming.

In Dead on Ice, a body is found in an old freezer in the basement of the cousin of Joshua Thornton. Cameron, Joshua’s girlfriend, is the investigating officer. She has to delve into the town’s past which some find awkward and uncomfortable. But Cameron is a strong woman and up to the task.

I not only like the murder mysteries in this book (yes, mysteries), but I like the relationship that is budding between Joshua and Cameron. And since there are kids involved, it can be complicated. Joshua and Cameron do a good job at making things work even if sometimes it takes them a little while to figure things out.

I definitely recommend Dead on Ice. Along with the mystery and drama there is a little suspense and humor. I’m looking forward to reading the next Lovers in Crime book.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Sean and Sara McKinley are private investigators. They used to be detectives in New York but they were able to quit their jobs after Sean received a windfall. They decided to open a PI business because they are good at solving murders and all of the profit goes to charity. Even though they don’t need the money, they take their business seriously.

When Sara’s fitness instructor asks her to look into the accident of one of her clients, Sean is skeptical. It turns out, though, that it may not be an accident after all. And there are several people who have a motive for murdering her. It takes all of their investigative skills to narrow down who the killer is.

The McKinley Mysteries are cozy mysteries which is a little different from Carolyn Arnold’s other series. Exercise is Murder is a quick and fun read. It includes mystery, a little romance, a little suspense, and some twists. I’m looking forward to reading more of Sean and Sara’s adventures.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I read A Flair for Chardonnay and A Flair for Drama which I enjoyed, so I was happy to read another book in the Sadie Kramer Flair Mysteries.

A Flair for Flip Flops is a murder mystery with a quirky main character who likes solving mysteries. Sadie often seems to be in the right place at the right time, and she tends to discover clues that detectives overlook. This time, she is on vacation and looking forward to a relaxing week on the beach. Right! The night Sadie arrives, she attends a dinner at which a celebrity is supposed to be the guest of honor, but he never shows up. She does make a new friend, Myrtle, who enjoys mysteries as much as Sadie. The next day, they jump right in and try to solve the possible murder of the celebrity.

I always enjoy the characters in the Flair Series. Sadie is 50ish and dresses rather flamboyantly. Her Yorkie Coco (my favorite) always accompanies her wherever she goes because Coco is so small and easy to hide; although, he tends to get into trouble on occasion.

Although this is a quick read, it’s a fun read and has a surprise or two. Of course, Sadie figures things out before the police do because that’s what she does! If you like a quick, fun mystery, you’ll definitely enjoy this book.

“Deborah Garner is gifted at bringing each character to life. She adds details seamlessly, making it seem like you know these people. She presents scenarios that have you thinking you know who did it, and then in the next sentence you are second guessing yourself. And that is to say, this is a great “who done it” … it gets 2 thumbs up from me :)” – reviews Tracy Helps You

“I love the way Deborah Garner describes everything in this book, and I can’t wait to read more in this series! This book literally kept me guessing until the very end.” – reviews Sanity is for those without children

“Deborah Garner has created a unique and very flamboyant main character who seems to find trouble all by herself and turns into an amateur sleuth!” – reviews Miki’s Hope

Book Review: Death at the Dakota by M. K. Graff

Nurse Trudy Genova is making plans to take her relationship to NYPD detective Ned O’Malley to the next level, when she lands a gig as medical consultant on a film shoot at the famed Dakota apartment building in Manhattan, which John Lennon once called home. Then star Monica Kiley goes missing, a cast member turns up dead, and it appears Trudy might be next. Meanwhile Ned tackles a mysterious murder case in which the victim is burned beyond recognition. When his investigations lead him back to the Dakota, Trudy finds herself wondering: how can she fall in love if she can’t even survive?

Readers of Death Unscripted, the first book in the Trudy Genova Manhattan Mystery series, will find the same pleasures in this sequel: fast pacing, engaging characters, twists and turns on the way to a satisfying close. Once again M.K. Graff reveals her talents in crafting this delightful mix of amateur sleuth and police procedural.

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review. I enjoyed reading Death Unscripted so I was looking forward to reading Death at the Dakota.

This is my favorite kind of mystery. Even though there’s murder involved, it’s still a fun and quick read. I was also a bit surprised a couple of times which is always good.

I like the main character, Trudy Genova. She appears strong and independent, and she’s finally getting over her trust issues with men thanks to Detective Ned O’Malley. They have trouble finding time to be together because they’re both so busy with their jobs, but they’re finally ready to take their relationship to the next level. Will it ever happen?

There’s not one but two murder mysteries and both end up being Ned’s cases, one being on the set where Trudy works. The way everything was solved was both interesting and exciting. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Book Review: Initiation in Paradise (Book 17) by Deborah Brown

Margaritas, mangroves, murder. Just another day at the office.

One minute, Madison Weston and her bestie, Fab, are tailing Creole and Didier to figure out what they’re hiding. The next, a hail of bullets sends them swamp slogging for their lives. So much for cute shoes.

Eventually, Creole and Didier come clean: Bodies are turning up in shallow graves, and they didn’t want their women catching wind of it. Too bad, boys, this mystery is too juicy to pass up.

My Review

I chose to review this book after requesting a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve read most of the books in this series and I love these characters. They’ve become like good friends, and I’m always looking forward to their next story or adventure. Madison and Fab are best friends and although they’ve calmed down over the years, they’re still good private investigators. They’ve also both gotten married recently and have great relationships with their men.

Although Madison and Fab are trying to stay away from the more dangerous cases, danger seems to seek them out whether they’re on a case or not.

Initiation in Paradise has several cases that the girls take from serving divorce papers to a welfare check. None of their cases are simple no matter how easy they sound which results in danger, humor, or both. I can always count on a good laugh when I’m reading a Paradise book.

As with all of the Paradise books, Initiation in Paradise was a quick and enjoyable read. Deborah Brown has a good sense of humor and you never know what’s going to happen. I especially liked the ending although it was not what I expected, and I’m looking forward to Madison and Fab’s next adventure.

Although this series is best read in order, all of the books stand alone. I definitely recommend them if you like independent women who are loyal and passionate about family, life and love.

About the Author

The Paradise series, are Florida Keys mysteries, “great as stand-alone reads, but they’re like chips…you won’t be able to devour just one!”

I’ve been writing, in one way or another for as long as I can remember; poetry, sappy short stories (my best friend made me swear that I’d never show anyone until I changed the names), and a romance novel shoved under my bed.

I wanted to create books with a wide-range of unforgettable characters, with heat and romance, and lots of guns. It wouldn’t be complete without a slice of humor and charm.

I live with my family and demon children aka rescue cats in South Florida.
