Last Resort

The threat of disclosure after years in obscurity found our three hackers in a quandary. Do they take the accolades handed out by the highest power in the world, or cower beneath their cloak of mystery forever?

Passing years and wealth beyond most people’s wildest dreams would be no compensation for being disclosed as thieves.

An empire built from their spoils had led to a mix of overcoming evil on an unprecedented level whilst seeking to prevent the extinction of endangered species.

With the realisation that nothing lasts forever, plans must be made for the next move.

About the Author:

L. J. Greatrex was born one of three siblings in a small village in the Midlands, having only moved around the same village three times with just a small break when living in West Kirby on the Wirral. L. J.’s career began with General Electric and progressed through to the financial sector of the steel industry, spending the most recent years with a classic car parts company and today as their Financial Health Consultant.

Over many years travelling the globe with family and friends for pleasure, the ideas developed and used in the Hackers series of novels (which includes Conscious Revenge, Payback, Just Deserts, Without A Doubt, Doubt Revisited, Informed Decision, Dark Forces and Misconception) have been in part attributed to these experiences; that and a vivid imagination has helped create the characters and situations in these thriller novels.

Excerpt from the Book:

“Keep your head down,” Paul shouted above the confusion, “it looks like a raid.”

Before I could take evasive action, a heavy boot kicked out, and I fell to the floor in agony. Keeping my head covered by my arms, I narrowly missed a second boot as the two ran to the door, firing guns randomly to avoid being pursued.

From screaming and shouting, to complete silence as the pair made their intentions to kill anyone getting in their way quite clear. They shot widely in all directions as some players screamed, and cries rang out as the shots ricocheted and flew randomly, piercing flesh in their attempted to escape.

Paul was thrown to the floor by security men, as a whole team of muscle-bound bouncers raced to the scene. I heard his head hit the side of the elevator and watched in horror as he slowly moved to one side to prevent being trampled underfoot.

The elevator door opened, and two tourists began entering the room, only to step back in haste having seen the commotion, “give me your hand,” one said to Paul as I tried to move him.

“Where are you hurt,” I said, seeing blood oozing through his shirt.

“I’m not sure, but it hurts like hell,” he murmured, not wishing to attract attention as the second wave of raiders wearing clown masks fired into the air.

Don’t Look Back

A moving story of domestic violence and overcoming it

We all experience love and romance in life and sometimes hurt. But for some, it can be a more sinister experience of manipulation and physical abuse, this is a story of a young woman who unfortunately did experience this. Blaming herself and feeling worthless until she was too frightened to speak out. This story depicts such a marriage and how she found the strength to fight back and reclaim her life; good versus evil. Just another twist in the rich tapestry we weave as we move through life.

About the Author:

Barbara Anne Machin was born in 1940 and is the youngest of eight children. She is married and has one son, and recently celebrated her diamond wedding anniversary. She has always been interested in writing but has never attempted to publish before. A friend and her husband encouraged Barbara to send her trilogy of stories to a publisher. She writes more for a hobby and has worked all her life and still works part-time.  She has held many managerial positions in large companies and does not like to be idle.

This is Barbara’s third book.  Her first book is entitled “A Beloved Cousin” (2019) and her second book is “Shadow of Guilt” (2020).

Excerpt from the Book:

“Well, sir, there is no easy way to say this, but there has been an incident at your daughter’s house.”

“My Maisie!” he asked in amazement.

“Can you tell me if Maisie has been in touch with her ex-husband, Hugh Grainger, recently?”

“In touch with him, never!  She never will again after how he abused her in America.  She would never let him near to her again.  Maisie lost our grandchild because of the beating that he gave her, she still hasn’t got over that.  Why do you ask?”

“So, he has abused and beat her before?”

“Yes, but…” Maisie’s dad did not get any further.

“Now what are you saying, is Maisie all right?  He hasn’t hurt her again, has he?” Gwen asked butting in before her dad could answer.”

“I’m afraid he has gained entry into her property while she was sleeping and beat her badly and if it hadn’t been for the quick intervention of her neighbours, God knows what else he would have done.  They have taken her to the local hospital in Chester, so if you would like to get yourself changed, we’ll take you to the hospital.”

“Is she going to be all right?” her dad asked.

Christ’s Hospital: Tradition with Vision celebrates nearly five centuries of a unique independent school founded in 1552 to educate and support disadvantaged children. Through an interwoven collection of poetry and essays, contributors focus on the positive impact, ethos, tradition and vision that Christ’s Hospital represents. Reviewing history and anticipating the school’s quincentenary in 2052, this book poses key questions about the challenges of coming decades in secondary education and society generally, considering as it does so some of the contributions Christ’s Hospital might make to a changing world.

All proceeds of the book support the Benevolent Society of Blues.

Reviews of this book:

“This unique look at Christ’s Hospital brings memory and imagination together…. I’ve discovered a heritage and thriving affection that looms large in the minds and hearts of Old Blues around the world today.”

(Professor Jeffrey Barbeau Wheaton College, USA; Associate Editor, The Coleridge Bulletin)

“Tucked away in the pages of this book are fascinating nuggets.  Let the great debate on CH develop imaginatively in fulfilment of the 1552 charitable mission.”

(Andrew Cosedge London, Chair, Benevolent Society of Blues)

“This delightful anthology of poetry and prose celebrates the traditional charitable mission, ethos and ideals of Christ’s Hospital since its foundation by King Edward VI in 1552.  It deserves to be widely read.”

(Stanley Johnson Somerset, Environmentalist, European Politician)

Excerpt from the Book:

“In recent years, Christ’s Hospital has extended its welcome, not only to those from disadvantaged backgrounds, but also to all who wish to experience an education of breadth, rich variety, and excellence.  And individuals from across the globe have been drawn to the school as a result.  This recent shift is a testament to how Christ’s Hospital has been able to flourish for over 450 years, adapting constantly to the surrounding political and socio-economic environment, surviving the Great Fire of London in 1666; its relocations to Horsham in 1902 and from Hertford in 1985; and, more significantly, World Wars I and II to which the school lost some 600 Old Blues.  In terms of withstanding time, Christ’s Hospital has proved to be especially successful and resilient.  The ability of the school to successfully adapt to its surroundings is possible, in part, through its foresight and continuous engagement with the wider community.  The factors have allowed the school accurately to determine social conditions and to take appropriate action to preserve the continuation of the school.  The remit has extended to looking into the future to determine what role the school can play on a national and international platform.”

When, after 18 unexplained miscarriages, Louise Warneford was finally able to carry a baby to full-term, she felt overwhelming gratitude to those who had made this birth possible. She knew that without UK Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Dr Hassan Shehata’s diagnosis and successful treatment of a problem with her body’s natural killer cells, and the expert fertility service provided by the doctors at the Gynem Clinic in Prague, she would have remained childless. This book tells how she went from almost constant grief and loss to the joy she has found today. The name of this joy is William Oliver Warneford, and he is now two years old.

“Louise was brave and persevered with the unusually high number of miscarriages. She was quite determined to succeed and both her and her partner deserved a chance to be parents. I was very pleased to have managed to help them succeed and be part of such an incredible journey.”

(Dr Hassan Shehata, Centre for Reproductive Immunology and Pregnancy)

Excerpt from the Book:

“I’ve read about other couples who struggle to conceive and in some ways their experiences and feelings are similar to mine and Mark’s.  After repeated failure of conception, the romance of their relationship is replaced by science:  charts, temperatures and diagrams take the place of kisses, cuddles and sometimes even joy itself.  Performance becomes less about providing mutual satisfaction and more about reaching targets.  The aim of conceiving a child takes precedence and the days of lovemaking ‘just for fun’ become a thing of the past.  Obviously, this can put a strain on even the strongest relationship, with blame and recrimination creeping in like a poisonous gas.

Apart from a couple of occasions (my very first IVF and the first occasion in Prague), my initial fertility treatment was always successful, so Mark and I didn’t really have the problems that these couples experience.  But there was still hurt and anger, on both sides.  My own hurt couldn’t be blamed on Mark; it was simply one part of my natural feeling of loss.  And my anger was mostly the result of frustration at my seemingly never-ending plight, although there were times when I was angry with myself for being unable to accept life without a child of my own.”

The Adventures of Mr Shakolobangoshay is a novel incredibly super packed with strange and mysterious events. It’s equally laced with thrillers, love, romance; suspense, intrigue, blackmail and murder.

Even though it is not a religious book, this book will help you discover how God reaches out and speaks to us and makes the impossible things possible!

Mr Shakolokobangoshay, the protagonist, as a character, is benevolent and a unique status symbol of God’s Creation who rose from the jungle forest of Madagascar to fight relentlessly against poverty and illiteracy among the less privileged; the poor, the orphans, the destitute children and adults of his time. He provided them with hopes and homes.

Excerpt from the book:

‘In the Malagasy jungle rainforest, as a child of 3-5 years, "For days on end, months and years, during the rainy seasons; I was mercilessly beaten by the pitiless, non-stop heavy and torrential tropical rain falls. I was also exposed to their dehumanizing and frightening thunder storms!" I never had a shelter or roof over my head!’

The world’s crops have been destroyed by a mysterious virus, and the end of mankind draws near. However, the Grey aliens from Xi Boötes, the constellation of the farmer, have coincidentally come to the rescue. The Greys have promised to take everyone to a better world, one with fertile land, clean oceans, ample living space, and without war and want. But it could be a perilous journey for in the universe humans do not sit atop the food chain. Helping the Greys evacuate planet Earth are their mysterious transhuman helpers. And will disturbed psychologist Cornelius Aka unlock their secrets or follow most of the planet to its ultimate destination?

About the Author:

No one let me into their world so I invented a few of my own; paranormal romance, fantasy, science fiction, and dystopian. Welcome to my Universe.

I never had an anchor nor a compass, so I sailed wherever the prevailing took me – sometimes to paradise but often to a wasteland where I dreamed of better days. Mood swings are the switch of creativity.

My motto is, ‘Under pressure, underestimated, going down but not going under.’

My favourite quote is, ‘Normality is a pavement comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it,’ by Vincent van Gogh.

Excerpt from the Book:

“President Bezel addressed the nation almost every hour, and this time he had the best message of all; the aliens had a new home for us. It was uninhabited by intelligent life, and rich in resources, fertile land, and water, with animals to tend and oceans to fish. New America they called it, and there was a New China, a Brazil Two, and Greater Britain. In fact, there was a planet for every nation on the Earth such was the size of the universe. And if you wanted a multicultural world, that was on offer too; just tick the box on your ticket, which unlike our currencies couldn’t be counterfeited.

The Earth was cheering, for humanity had a second chance, and those calling for a black planet or a faith-based paradise would get their wish. I was worried that it seemed too good to be true, but I couldn’t ignore the spaceships in the skies, and humans weren’t as bright as we once thought.”

An exceptional collection of inter-related stories

This series of stories address everyday issues sympathetically and with excellent character development whilst depicting people which many readers will identify with as the storylines are creatively and skillfully intertwined. This eclectic collection of stories expresses all of the human emotions of the characters with great sensitivity and with pathos.

About the Author:

Stewart Scott, the author of this short story collection, published A Bridge and Not an End earlier this year which is a family saga spanning a number of generations and over many decades and takes the reader across time, oceans and continents in the context of important historical events.  Traditional values of love, courage, passion and hardship are all explored in this skillfully-written blend of family narratives.

Excerpt from the Book:

“My mum turned from the sink, shaking her head sadly. “Son, I’m sorry, I was going to tell you tonight over dinner. Poor Johnny.” Tears welling in her eyes. “He wasn’t doing so well, I’d see his mum from time to time and she was worried. He’d quit his job, he was drinking heavily and she thinks he was taking drugs. I was going to tell you, but I don’t hear from you for weeks at a time these days.”

She couldn’t resist slipping that in, a constant refrain these days. “They found him a week ago. They’d gone out to lunch, a couple of weeks ago and came home to find him hanging from the bannisters by an electrical cord. I’m sorry I had to tell you. His mum wanted me to tell you, because you were his best friend and she knows he would have wanted you to carry his coffin – you were always there for him. I’m sorry, Son.”

I just stared at her, reached up and pulled the antlers off my head, watched them fall to the wooden floor, saw her anguish at my shock and pain. Undeserving.

Too late. Too little. I’d carry his coffin, like the fraud I was, but my tears would be genuine.”

Australia is one of the highest-ranking parent-child abduction hotspots in the world.  The Child Snatchers takes an investigative look at some of Australia’s more notorious child-abduction cases. Each story is deeply personal, highly complex and frighteningly true. Were they a desperate act of protection or a despicable act of revenge?

The Child Snatchers explores the often bitter nature of separation and divorce, and our heavy reliance on the overburdened Australian Family Law system. It brings you the heartfelt, true accounts of left-behind parents and the children they longed for. Some are heart-warming, successful recoveries; others may never see their children again. All leave you questioning everything you thought you knew.

About the Author

Jasmin Newman is an educator, mediator and coach who has been an active proponent in the reform family law system since 2013. Her interest in family court matters arose when, through her work, she found herself listening to heart-wrenching stories of parental alienation and abduction, all of which involved complex family court decisions. Jasmin immersed in herself in understanding the history of Australian family law and the interested political lobby groups which shaped its legislation. With neither the mothers’ or fathers’ groups happy with outcomes, the system was failing everyone, but none more so than the children.

This raised deep questions on the efficacy of family law in parenting disputes and the public’s over-reliance on using it. How could legislation, which in theory was designed for child protection, result in such catastrophic outcomes?

With a pragmatic, child-focused approach, Jasmin helps parents navigate divorce and separation through her parenting after separation course and mediation business.  She remains a dedicated advocate for a less adversarial family separation process.

Excerpt from the Book

“By talking to dozens of parents, reading countless stories and watching associated documentaries, the standout observation is that the left-behind parent is always the one who was willing to co-parent. Even after abduction recovery, their strongest desire was to facilitate a relationship with the other parent so the children could have as normal upbringing as possible.

When I learned of the mothers fighting for their children in Islamic countries, I felt sure I would be hearing stories of hopelessness. My experience was the opposite. These women were respected for choosing to follow the appropriate legal path of Sharia family court and were richly rewarded with custody for doing so. Their children were allowed to return to the country of their birth, the people they know and love and a culture they were intended to be raised in. Then most satisfying of all, they were not traumatised twice in order to facilitate their repatriation.

In dire situations where parents use recovery agents, the least damaging approach is one of negotiations. Where that’s not possible, reuniting the children with their left-behind parents and allowing them to come willingly causes the least stress on the child. If, and only if the agent has done their due diligence on the alleged left-behind parent. By far the worst, most traumatic approach is when children are snatched away from loving family members suddenly – especially by people they do not know.”

This ground-breaking book exposes a taboo aspect of Holocaust history;   the sexual abuse of children. Children were sexually assaulted in ghettos, camps, on transit trains, while in hiding, and even when sent to supposed safety outside Europe.  The Nazi’s genocidal brutality facilitated the abuse of children, in addition to targeting them for murder. In addition, children were sexually assaulted by some rescuers and peers who took advantage of their vulnerability. After the war, they were again betrayed by those who discounted their experiences, and by Holocaust scholars who refuse to acknowledge their stories or give credence to their memories.

About the Author:

Dr Beverley Chalmers has dedicated her life to studying women’s and children’s experiences in difficult social, political, economic and religious settings.  She has held professorial appointments in Faculties of both Medical and Social Sciences and served for decades as a maternal and child health consultant to numerous United Nations and other global health agencies.  Her inter-disciplinary focus and extensive international experience provide a unique perspective on the Nazi era and on the neglected issue of child abuse in the Holocaust.
In 2015, Bev’s book “Birth, Sex and Abuse: Women’s Voices Under Nazi Rule” was awarded the USA National Jewish Book Award, the Canadian Vine Award for Jewish Literature, a CHOICE ‘Outstanding Academic Title’ Award, and a Canadian Jewish Literary Award. She has two doctoral degrees: a Doctorate of Science in Medicine (DSc (Med)) and a PhD in Psychology.

Reviews of “Betrayed:  Child Sex Abuse in the Holocaust”:

“Sexual abuse was one of the many horrors that some children were forced to endure during the Holocaust. But their stories deserve to be told.

‘Betrayed’ is a well-written and researched, albeit difficult, read that gives these victims a voice to be heard.”

(Dr Tessa Chelouche M.D, Unesco Chair of Bioethics, Haifa)

“With a rare combination of humane empathy and scholarly criticism, Beverley Chalmers delves into a disturbingly difficult subject: the sexual abuse of children during World War II. Her research sheds light on the various forms of child abuse, and undermines conventional categorization patterns. For example, Chalmers shows that children were sexually abused not only by people related to the occupying forces or by hostile strangers, but also by others, including some of their very protectors. Chalmers puts the children and their suffering in the center and makes their voices – their cries – heard; by doing so, she creates a wider awareness of this dreadful phenomenon, awareness that is crucial to anyone who wishes to build a better world for our children.”

(Noam Rachmilevitch, archivist at the Ghetto Fighter’s House, Israel)

Once in answer to the question, “What was most likely to blow a government off course?” Harold Macmillan is said to have replied, “Events, dear boy, events.”

Two striking examples show how serious and unintended consequences can flow from seemingly unconnected events.

In 1880, Lady Ampthill, the wife of the British Ambassador in Berlin took Crown Prince Wilhelm sculling. He jumped straight into the boat and capsized it, but could not swim. Lady Ampthill saved him. He later became Kaiser Wilhelm II and took Germany into the First World War.  If he had drowned, would the War have occurred?

Ruth Ellis was the last person to be hanged for murder.  She had an unremarkable affair with David Blakely.  It ended in 1955.  She shot him dead on the public highway with five bullets from a revolver. She shot the sixth bullet after he was dead deliberately into the ground which caused a passer-by to be very slightly injured from a ricochet. She was sentenced to death.  Petitions for reprieve were rejected.  She was duly hanged.  The Home Secretary explained “We cannot have people shooting off firearms in the street — she not only killed Blakely but injured a passer-by. I was determined that people could use the streets without fearing a bullet.”  If only she had fired the sixth bullet into Blakely’s dead body, she would almost certainly have been reprieved.

Chance is indeed a fine thing.

The aphrodisiac of power is what causes politicians and others in high places to indulge in secret risk taking, usually involving sex. They have a craving for applause and recognition. They have an astonishing belief in their own good luck in remaining undiscovered. At the same time, they enjoy the excitement of what Oscar Wilde described as “Feasting with Panthers.” The risks they take involve danger and secrecy and are all a potent mix of spice and drug. Lloyd George, Gladstone Asquith, Disraeli and Dilke all indulged.

Newspaper magnates like the Harmsworths and Beaverbrook craved a different power. It was to use their papers to exercise control over politicians and seek to dictate policy. Criminals like Bottomley and Maundv Gregory fed on the gullibility of investors to amass fortunes. David Owen (former Foreign Secretary) described it as the “Hubris Syndrome” namely a concern with image, excessive confidence in their own judgements and exaggerated self-belief, bordering on a sense of omnipotence.

“Shadow of Guilt” by Barbara Anne Machin is published

A collection of stories reflecting human strengths & frailties

About the Book:

This is a new collection of stories from Barbara Anne Machin, here depicting our human frailties and the cord of life that at times holds people together and at times drives them apart.  Perhaps we can overcome, perhaps we can’t, but we all take this journey of love, anger and sometimes separation, often finding ourselves back where we began…. this is the circle of life.

Excerpt from the Book:

“I don’t believe in love, Mr Loring, it only brings heartache,” she replied cynically.  Clare felt a deep pain in her chest.  Julie had died in vain and all hope of ever liking this man had vanished with his callous words.

“Well, now, we have agreed on a course of action I will call tomorrow and bring someone to babysit while we shop for a ring and some necessary items.”  Looking down at her slacks, he added, “I can’t have my bridge looking like a boy on our wedding day.”

Clare cut short her retort as he wagged his finger and walked slowly towards her.  She felt like a rabbit caught in a trap and could neither move nor drag her gaze from his face as he reached and pulled her onto her feet.  She didn’t struggle as he pulled her to him.

Looking into her eyes, he murmured, “If we are going to be married, we might as well act as if we are happy about it.”  He gripped her under her chin and kissed her with such passion it sent her senses reeling.  For one short moment she tried to fight her feelings then found herself responding to his caresses.  Clare felt him tremble, then abruptly he let her go.

“Would you like me to stay for a while so you could have a rest?” he said, lifting an eyebrow.  “I can listen out for Julian.”

“I have managed for the last two months,” Clare said sarcastically.  “I’m sure I can manage a little longer.”

Adrian took her by surprise and brushed his lips once more across hers.

“As you wish.  Until tomorrow, 10 o’clock sharp.”

He smiled mockingly as Clare dragged her hand across her mouth as if to wipe away any track of his kiss.”

“Burred Screws” by C. T. Lee published by New Generation Publishing

Extraordinary & riveting stories about real-life relationships

About the Book:

This book tells no tales; it speaks someone’s mind.

None of it can be helped.

None of it can be undone.

Some of it may be true.

This is a short book about relationships real or imagined and the cost of their distractions. Rest assured that every word is caked with autobiographical detail or other fantasies.

A cacophony of joy and misery awaits.

Excerpt from the book:

“And we’re back in the room. The walls change their material and geography gradually, but the confinement is unyielding. It’s a petrified voyage from concreted greenfield to polluted Parisian goldfish bowl, to life above a rural slurry tank and then a cramped, messy London flat I do not own or share.

All attention on the scar, once more: I woke up with an urge to cut my face this morning, just a line here or there. The itchy pains and weeping wound that come with it put me off. I hate myself and the situation I’m in. Still, I never looked tough enough to be left in peace, never looked like I’d fight for it with all of my energy. Perhaps I should acquaint some people with some harsh facts, get my scars the easy way and have the satisfaction of earning them publicly. I’m fit enough to do it, to hold my own, but then what? The scar-face look is hardly going to boost my job prospects, get me into some halfway decent office post. No, this is wrong: I won’t live long enough for such things to matter. I have enough to involve myself with until I can earn my title and carry the scars remotely through some obscure, critical analysis of another fool’s pain and suffering.

I know why I feel this way: I should’ve dropped her when I realised I didn’t have a certain future. I’m not angry at her; I’m selfish and stupid.”

An enthralling chronicle of two young men – one white, one black – in apartheid South Africa

About the Book

The destinies of two young men in apartheid South Africa become inexorably intertwined in their pursuit of what is right.

Zak Ginsberg is shaped by his parents’ sad histories. Awareness of the Second World War, his Jewishness and the status of the black population slowly infiltrate his consciousness.

Mpande Gumede has spent an idyllic childhood in rustic Zululand. At high school, he realises for the first time, that he is a second-class citizen.

Zak studies the art of saving lives. Mpande pursues the craft of destroying lives. Both are drawn into the anti-apartheid struggle. The one acts because his ancestors were victims, the other because he himself is a victim.

Newspaper and Amazon reviews:

The Jerusalem Post

”The novel’s epic proportions, sharp political context and Hoffmann’s keen eye for detail make for an engrossing and enlightening read.”

The Jerusalem Report

”Hoffmann…. is a fine writer….

Be warned: This is the kind of book that might cause to you to smile or even laugh as you read it, but it will ultimately make you cry. Once you start reading it, though, you may not be able to put it down.”

Amazon

”A splendid book which juxtaposes the needs of conscience and one’s place in society.”

”A rare gem fusing literary genres….

(It) does not take us down the beaten path and feed us the same clichés we’ve heard before. Here, novel insights are presented in a beautiful, elegiac language, and a profoundly gripping and genuinely unique ending turns everything on its head. And throughout all of it, heartwarming humor bubbles beneath the surface, making the pain of the characters just a little less terrible to endure…..

I would recommend it to anyone who seeks something more from a novel than just a quick thrill, and who would like to be challenged, emotionally as well as intellectually.”

”A Wonderful Historical Fiction Dealing WithAnti-Apartheid Activism in South Africa”

”Jack Hoffmann has produced a superbly written novel…

This is a subtle, thoughtful work that deserves a wide readership.”

”Riveting….This is a skillfully-written book about two young men in South Africa as their paths cross in pursuit of what is racial equality.”

An account of a manorial estate in Medieval England

Today, in times of fading borders and challenged national identity, this book celebrates a treasured feature of English Heritage

About the Book

Domestic rebellions and foreign wars, the king’s rule, murder, traitors and execution, crippling debt, arranged marriages of young heirs and heiresses, avoidance of taxes, medieval decrees of inheritance, the black death and famine.  All that and more can be found in a fascinating new book based on the meticulous research of exceptional author Murray Johnston.

While his first book, The Watford Knight’s Fee, will satisfy serious students and enthusiasts of medieval English history, his second opens the door to everyone.  A time machine takes the reader along a fascinating and sometimes wobbly journey with the lords of the manor through 700 years – including, unique in English history, one family for 500 years.

Welcome to the world of manors in medieval England!

For more details about this book, see:  https://www.giveamanor.com

Excerpt

Eustace III: The Rebel

In his later years, King John saw a transition of the Watford manor to Eustace III. His father died well-advanced in years, so Eustace III was no youngster, long since ‘of age’. Although not destined to be lord of Watford for long, Eustace lived through one of the most tumultuous times in English history – the First Baron’s War and the Magna Carta…

John de Ardern, brother of Eustace III, was disappointed to find that the 7 virgates in Watford given to him in his father’s lifetime were mortgaged. His father, Eustace II, had given John’s inheritance as security for a loan from the Jews of Northampton. Eustace II paid 70 shillings annually to the king’s exchequer for the debt, and now the same obligation lay on John’s shoulders. Unfortunately, like his father he was short of cash. Instead, John provided a horse for the king’s use as substitute for his father’s annual payment of 70s, and so the king granted John his lands…

The First Barons War commenced when the barons attacked but failed to take Northampton Castle. Nonetheless, they proceeded to successfully take London. King John was forced to attach his great seal to the Magna Carta in June 1215. But John set aside the Great Charter and the war with the barons continued. Many of the barons, including supporters such as Eustace de Watford, were cast adrift by the king due to their allegiance to the rebel cause.”

About the Author

Murray Johnston is the author of several books on family history venturing as far back as the 16th century. Rediscovering medieval places, events and people became an inseparable part of his life. Exploring connections to an ancient English parish introduced him to the medieval world of manors and the rise and decline of one in particular through seven centuries. Living the adventure of researching more than a thousand documents found in England’s greatest archival institutions gave Murray the basis for his latest book: Give a Manor Take a Manor.

About the Book

International Political & Environmental Folly – Edition 7 [issued in early 2019] was started after a two year stint in USA & Canada was completed in 1959.

This publication shows that political organisations are taking too much money from the public and using it incorrectly. The politicians blame the banks for the same reason but it is thought that both are to blame.

The politicians appear to be taking the global warming threat seriously but do not seem to recognise the full story since the physicists who advise the Government appear to have gotten the issue wrong too.

This is a complex matter which is explained in the book entitled above. It is serious matter because eventually & SOON the central black hole of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which has been taking up space matter for millions of years will explode because the temperature and pressure rise with the take up till the system melts…. followed a few milliseconds later by a nuclear explosion.  This will undo the mechanism that holds our galaxy together and chaos will reign, killing all Earth bound life unless….

The book at Edition 7 goes on to explain how to shift the solar system out of ‘OUR GALAXY’ thereby saving the LIFE STOCK of Mother Earth. Of course, that assumes the task is completed before the predicted event takes place.

The author gave up the impossible task of warning Central Government
of the situation that was being built up by local authorities & Central Government in 2007 and bought a property in the Caribbean.  It was then he decided to carry out the seemingly impossible task of getting enough information to halt the ‘progress’ of local authority & Central Government.

This matter was solved by mentally returning to the UK research station that employed the writer as a scientist in charge of the Physics Electronic Section where coating of plastic bodies with a ‘metal skin’ was discussed. Although the BH termination is somewhat different, the writer solved the case of BH’s behaviour from the result of that recalled investigation, and the book developed from that standpoint. The book warns that a serious matter exists unless action is promptly taken.

About the Author

Born in 1925, the author served in The Royal Navy and was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy during WW2. He and his wife Joan (who has now passed on) have three daughters.  Following demobilization from the Royal Navy, the author studied mathematics, physics, and electronics which were put to use in the USA and Canada. Returning to England, the author settled in Hertfordshire and was employed in research, military, medical, industrial electronics, nucleonics, and avionics. On retiring, the author relocated to Dorset where he obtained his pilot’s license and later his own Cessna Aircraft for recreational use. He also indulged in another hobby, horology. Later still, an attempt to relocate to his Caribbean retreat ended due to ill health. The author underwent spinal surgery in January 2011 and hopes to renew his recreational flying in due course.

New Releases

This book has a timely message as the UK attempts to struggle out of the chaos of Brexit. It asks the question, should the majority carry the vote? If the answer to that question is yes then we have a lot to consider. Do our leaders always serve us well? Have they got our interests before their own? Should we just follow like sheep? The author asks some searching questions and finds some disturbing answers. This is a book that needs to be read – before it is too late.

Excerpt

“When I started to write this, the thought that was the uppermost in my mind is how our leaders are misleading us all. As I said right at the beginning, we have been guilty in the past of trusting blindly the leaders and those in authority over us, just because they are in the position they are in. Now when we see what is happening in the UK, in America and in many other places in the world, perhaps we realise that if we choose a blind man to lead us, then our world will turn into darkness. Do we really know what people are thinking? Do we really know that we’re not being fed poison drip by drip, so that our hearts and minds are changed?

This is not a time for leaders who have selfish ambitions. What we need in our lives are servant leaders, not those who place themselves in power over us as lords. There is only one Lord, and that is the Lord God, and with him caring for us, there is no need for us to follow blindly in ways that may not be good for us. God has a plan for you, and he will be the one who will guide your destiny if you trust in him. You can be very much less certain of what will happen to you if you put your trust in human beings.

Now it is time for us to take back the power to ourselves. I’m not suggesting that we use violence to take over the reins of power. With God as our Guide, we need to find a way to change the world in a peaceful and quiet way, and a way that is validated by goodness, fairness, and the desire to have all people treated equally. A movement has started in the area of climate change, where frequent demonstrations, many including children taking the day off school, to make a difference in the world that they will inherit. This is the kind of change that we need, and we also need to do what we know is good for us, and that is aligned with integrity on Christ-like grounds.”

Eric has a miserable childhood in a violent, drunken family in a tough London housing estate. He compensates by looking for perfection. For him, this means worldly success in a diplomatic career as far away from his childhood as possible. His single-minded ambition comes at a price. It makes him leave his childhood sweetheart Katie behind, since he knows that she can’t keep up with him. Their ways part. Eric marries an upper-class woman and becomes an Ambassador. However, Katie and he never quite lose touch. After his wife’s death Eric and Katie come together again. There is action and pace, fun and sadness, a huge variety of life experiences and a sense of providence and redemption.

Excerpt

“Katie cried herself to sleep. The next morning she woke up with a heavy head and a terrible anguish. The worst had happened to her. Eric did not want her. He was not going to marry her. She felt as if the floor had fallen from under her feet. She could not fathom it. He was not going to marry her because it would make her unhappy. That just wasn’t true. She might not have understood everything, but as she knew she made him happy, of course happiness would have followed in a marriage. She would not have demanded anything; she was content for him to rule the roost. He knew better anyhow.

There had to be some hidden reason for him not to want to marry her. She knew and felt that he loved her. Was it perhaps something connected to those deep, dark moods of which she had the odd glimpse on the occasions when he had got drunk in her company? The depth of those dark feelings had frightened her. She realised that she knew only patches of his character and what drove him on.

To the world he was jolly and superficial. What had he wanted? Now that she thought about it, Katie remembered how at the beginning he had tried to interest her in history, art and music, but seeing that she did not have the same enthusiasm, he had given up on that. He had tried to teach her card games, but she had no card sense, and it had had to be given up.”

A cultural book, which tells the story about the relationship between two best friends in a struggle for survival in the forest, written in both English and Portuguese

The Hunger in the Forest series of books represents a culture and way of life that children may not be familiar with. This first story on the series, Fuuuurrrrr n’bum, teaches important life lessons to children whilst telling them that life is not all roses and a happy ending, but if you learn certain things like ‘listening & following instructions’, then you’ll do great in life.

About the Author:

Rosa Brandao is of African descent.  Being an African is one of the richest benefits as a black woman in society. This gave Rosa the best childhood she could ever imagine.  Her imagination as a child has empowered her to create this magical world that she is so eager to share with everyone and especially with her son; the inspiration that made it all possible.

Excellent children’s story from African cultural written in both English and Portuguese

31 May 2019 – Published on Amazon.co.uk

“I read this children’s book to my two children, and they loved it! There is a hunger in the forest, and the wolf, rabbit and others need to be creative and crafty in order to fill their bellies.

This story reminded me of the Grimm Brothers’ tales which are more realistic than Disney’s fairy tales in teaching important life lessons to children, painting a picture of the real world that can often be difficult and challenging, but if you listen properly, pay attention to detail, focus on what you want to achieve and reach for it, and so on, you’re likely to be more successful in navigating your way through life.

I also like the fact that this story clearly draws from Portuguese culture, as the author (Rosa) says that she was told this story when she was a child, and she wants to share it more widely as the book is cleverly written both in English and in Portuguese, and beautifully illustrated with rich, vibrant colours, reflecting the African cultural values and experiences which imbue this story.”

About the Book:

Designed to help everyone, from complete beginners to those who want to take their next steps in the world of investing and trading, this book can help you learn and more importantly understand how to create wealth using stable financial assets like shares.

Excerpt from the book:

“Somewhere in the middle of 2016, my son Michael, having just finished his zoology degree, said to me ‘so what’s all this share trading about then?’

Well, Michael, this is our answer!

In order to find out and answer that basic question, Michael and I have been on a year-long journey to discover what we can learn about share investing and trading and this is the result – a strategy and guidebook for anyone to follow in order to achieve a steady 10% return on small amounts of money which, if properly invested, will create financial freedom for most people and most families over time.

Our learning journey has been taken together as a mum and son – we’ve attended all courses together for instance and throughout the writings we have used I/we interchangeably.  Sometimes the I is Michael and sometimes it’s me.

We’ve also used £ and $ fairly indiscriminately.  These strategies work wherever you are and whatever your local currency might be and we invest in both the USA and UK for instance – but we could invest anywhere in the world from our desk at home.  We’ve identified a couple of share brokers who between them cover more or less the entire globe – so again, it doesn’t matter where you live or what currency you start with – these strategies are entirely possible for you!”

Excerpt from the book:

“He was in town about to make arrangements to obtain a basket of European currencies: German marks, Swiss francs, Italian lire, French francs and Dutch guilders.

‘Excuse me sir,’ said a man in a raincoat, ‘police.’ He and his colleague produced a badge.

‘What’s this about?’

‘Where were you last Thursday night, around 11.00 p.m.?’

‘I don’t have to answer this!’

‘We can do this down at the station if you like.’

The detective offered Floyd a cigarette, which he refused.

‘So,’ asked the detective. ‘Where were you last Thursday night, around 11.00 p.m.?’

‘At the Cloak and Dagger, having a drink.’

‘On your own?’

‘No, with a work colleague.’

‘Where do you work?’

‘Not working at the moment. I’m due to go on an Inter-rail trip around Europe quite soon.’

‘Where did you last work?’

‘Frixton library.’

The detective and his colleague exchanged glances.

‘Who was the work colleague you were with at the Cloak and Dagger?’

‘Jack Mills,’ said Floyd automatically. It was not until a few minutes later that he remembered what Jack had told him about grassing. But what had Jack done, if anything?”
