Hunterland

Supernatural meets Nancy Drew in Dana Claire’s New Young Adult Novel Hunterland

Liam Hunter has warded off hungry vampires, slayed monstrous beasts, and put agonized spirits to rest since he could hold a stake. When trouble comes through the Hunterland message board, alerting them that nurses are dying at high schools across Wisconsin in a string of fishy “suicides,” the Hunter family hits the road to save the
day.

The trail leads to Falkville Falls, where Liam clashes with Olivia Davis, whose maddening family seems inexplicably embroiled in this haunting mess. Olivia has always mothered her little sister, Pepper. But when the Hunter family opens her eyes to the hidden underworld of real monsters prowling the dark, she realizes she can’t protect Pepper from this newest threat by herself. Can the two families work together to uncover who or what is responsible before the next murder, or will this vicious death cycle have no end?

Grab your stakes and your rock salt. Monster hunting class is in session.

Olivia Davis is having a bad day. First of all, she accidentally stumbles across a dead body. The body of her school’s athletic advisor is found hanging in the main lobby of the building, and Olivia is one of many students who witnesses the body. However, as the daughter of a local cop, she is the only one who keeps her head.

This is one of several deaths of faculty in their high school in the last few months, and Olivia is suspicious of the fact that they are all being deemed suicides. Even more suspicious is the appearance of a new boy, Liam Hunter, who seems to walk right into the crime scene with no care in the world.

Liam and his family are monster hunters, finding and killing supernatural creatures like vampires, ghosts and witches before they can kill or hurt any more humans. Traveling the country, they hear about local disturbances and track them down. Now in Falkville Falls, Wisconsin, they are hot on the trail of whatever it is that’s killing faculty in Olivia’s school, but Liam will have to gain Olivia’s trust—and her help, before he can tackle this particular monster.

This was a fantastic book! I loved the supernatural elements and absolutely adored the worldbuilding. I’ve read a few of Dana Claire’s books before and this one was my favorite yet.

The relationship between Liam and Olivia was very sweet. I really appreciated the character growth between them meeting and absolutely hating each other at first, and then eventually finding level ground and even attraction to one another. I love a good enemies-to-lovers romance, so this was perfect for me!

I hope that Claire intends to write more novels set in this world, but if not, I will still be looking forward to whatever she decides to release next!

Guest Review by Sal

Taking place in 1861 in the Hebrides Islands off the coast of Scotland, ‘Saving the Selkie’s Heart,’ is an adventurous romance with a paranormal twist.

Lyall is a young woman who has just received an inheritance that she was not expecting. That inheritance? The knowledge that her parents, whom she previously thought were just a normal, hard-working couple, are actually selkies. Selkies are mythological creatures who have the ability to transform into seals simply by putting on their seal skin.

Taken aback by this discovery, Lyall soon realizes that she must be a selkie herself, but when she fails to transform into a seal on her first try, she worries that she is a failure, unable to carry on her family’s important legacy.

Compounding this worry is the revelation that her father, Lord Prion, a banished former prince in their selkie kingdom, has developed a fatal sickness. Determined to find a way to cure him, Lyall decides to travel to visit the Great Elder, the most honored and wise of the selkie clan who may just know how to help her father.

However, in order to get to the Great Elder, Lyall will have to enlist the help of one of her father’s most trusted soldiers, Ceannas. After getting off to a rough start, Lyall will have to deal with Ceannas’s brash attitude and sarcastic nicknames for her if she wishes to get close to the Great Elder. But, through working together, the two come to notice an attraction so strong that it just might be the foundation for something much, much more.

Having read the first book in Ella Rose’s ‘The Selkie Seas’ series, I knew I was going to love this one, and I was not disappointed! This is one that I think any reader will enjoy, regardless of their familiarity with the series. Five stars!

Guest Review by Sal

‘Stealing the Selkie’s Heart (The Selkie Seas, #1)’ by Ella Rose is a wild ride from start to finish! Right from the start, I could tell that this book was going to fit my interests and as I read along, I knew that I was correct.

Set in 1861 in the Hebrides Islands of Scotland, the book first introduces us to Ronan, a male selkie. Now, in case you don’t know, selkies are mythical creatures that can change back and forth between a seal form and a human form at will, simply by removing their seal skin. But there is a downside to this. The selkie’s seal skin has to be kept safe and hidden at all costs. If a human were to steal the skin, the selkie would have to bend to their will until it was returned.

This is a real myth that some will be familiar with (especially those of us with Scottish ancestry), but this book takes it to a new level by having Ronan’s selkie skin be stolen by none other than a woman who turns out to be his one true mate.

Una is a young widow who only wishes to seek Ronan’s help in stopping the curse that has been put on her town. However, once she finds out exactly how she is connected to Ronan, well, let’s just say things change a little bit. The two quickly begin to fall for each other, and each moment that they grow closer was a joy to read.

This is a fantastic paranormal romance and I highly recommend it if you enjoy the genre! This is also a great book to start out on if you’ve never read a paranormal romance but would like to try your first. Ella Rose’s writing is beautiful, descriptive and entertaining, and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future!

MY REVIEW

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

The After House has a little bit of everything: historical fiction, romance, suspense, mystery, thriller, and ghosts. It begins about 300 years ago when Eli Gaspar was a whaler and his story is told throughout the book. He ends up being a ghost in the cottage that Remy Galway rents but it’s not clear until the end of the book how things turned out for him.

When Remy and her daughter Olivia move into the cottage, Olivia immediately knows that they’re not alone. Then strange things start happening and it appears that not only is the house haunted, but someone wants Remy out of the way. There’s so much going on in this book and yet the middle of it seemed to drag to me. The ending almost made up for it though.

I liked the characters of Remy, Olivia, and Eli. Hugh seemed a bit too good although I did enjoy the Hugh/Who? conversation. I would have liked his character to be developed further. Also, I was confused about who the angel and apprentice were until close to the end.

The information about whalers and whaling was interesting and I enjoyed reading about it and Eli.

Book Review: Wicked Sense by Fabio Bueno

Wicked-Sense-Fabio-BuenoTitle: Wicked Sense

Author: Fabio Bueno

Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance

Publication Date: September 2012

Summary

Witches inhabit our world, organized in covens and hiding behind a shroud of secrecy—the Veil.

Skye’s London coven sends her to Seattle’s Greenwood High to find the Singularity, an unusually gifted witch who may break the Veil and trigger a dangerous new era of witch-hunting. Things get complicated when Skye meets a charming new classmate, Drake. Skye’s job becomes even trickier when she clashes with Jane, an intimidating rival witch.

Drake falls for the mysterious Skye, but odd accidents, potion mix-ups, and the occasional brush with death kind of get in the way of romance. Once he discovers Skye is a witch, he goes to war for her, even though his only weapons are a nice set of abs and a sharp sense of humor.

Fighting off wicked Jane and the other dark forces hell-bent on seizing the Singularity’s immense power, Skye and Drake will risk everything to save the covens.

Going on a date has never been harder.

Wicked Sense was the winner of the 2012 Sandy Literary Contest – 1st place – YA category.

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Wicked Sense is a young adult romance, the first in a series about the Singularity, a witch who has unusually strong powers. Skye is a witch who is assigned to Greenwood High in Seattle to try to locate the Singularity. She meets and falls for Drake who has never had a real girlfriend but is willing to give it a try with Skye. She also finds a good friend in Priscilla and a mortal enemy in Jane, who is also a witch.

Fabio Bueno’s writing is easy to follow. I liked the different chapters being from the different points of view. It made the story seem more real and it helped me understand the feelings of the characters.

There were aspects that were unique, such as the idea of the Singularity or that each witch has two charms; however, the story itself was pretty predictable. I knew who the Singularity was pretty early. Even though there weren’t many surprises, I still enjoyed Wicked Sense and I’m look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Book Review: Alchemy by Sheena Boekweg, Melanie Crouse and Sabrina West

1-21-2014 9-38-54 PM

1-21-2014 9-42-59 PMTitle: Alchemy (Prophecy Breakers)

Authors: Sheena Boekweg, Melanie Crouse and Sabrina West

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Description:

We didn’t know how much we had to lose until we were infected with magic. Sam was in love, Juliette was the main caretaker for her siblings, and Ana and her dad planned the best parties in New York. But we lost it all when we were shipped to Chebeague, an exclusive school for newly infected mages.

Everyone knows about the mages, those who survive the infection and end up with magical abilities. We’ve seen the power of magic, the high-paying jobs, and the world fame. But we never saw the cost. We didn’t know we’d be forced to give up everything: sanity, family, even the right to talk on the phone.

We didn’t know mage was just another word for prisoner.

Review:

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This world of magic is different than any other I’ve read about before and I found it interesting. Someone is infected with magic, gets crazy for a while, and then ends up with powers. Once someone is infected, they aren’t allowed to lead a “normal” life.

I like how Alchemy is in journal form and the reader can follow what each character is thinking by reading those journals. The main characters are unique, they each bring a different point of view, and I liked all three of them.

This story is well written and full of magic, suspense and humor. It is a good book not only for young adults but adults as well. I’m looking forward to reading the next book!

Available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Review:

I was given a free copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

The Death of the Mad Hatter is quite a journey. It is, as the title suggests, an adaptation of the classic, Alice in Wonderland. Sarah J. Pepper has a wild imagination and her story is disturbing yet fun.

All of the characters are strange but interesting. Alice Mae is truly unique and quite eccentric. Ryley starts out as a pretty normal teenager but, of course, this changes as the story progresses.

The story flows well although it is a bit confusing at times partly because of the language used by the Wonderland characters. I really liked the ending. Sarah J. Pepper has a wonderful sense of humor and (I can’t say it enough) a great imagination.

Death of the Mad Hatter would be a good read for both adults and young adults, especially fans of fantasy or Alice in Wonderland.
