Book Review: The Ultimate Memory Activity Book by Alexis Olson & Phil Fraas

Memory loss can be a scary experience, whether it’s age-related, recovery from brain injury, or memory loss due to a neurologic disorder like Alzheimer’s or a vascular condition like a stroke.

Mental engagement is a key aspect of brain health that is richly represented throughout this book. It includes varying levels of difficulty of word and number games that can be challenging and entertaining.

This book also provides information on how to support brain health by facilitating good nutrition, effective physical and mental exercise, quality sleep, and other healthy practices, with the goal of maintaining memory and overall brain health.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

As I get older, I can tell my memory isn’t what it used to be, so when I saw this book, I thought it would be good for my brain. These puzzles are too easy for me, but they would be good for someone who is having memory problems due to more than just aging. I like the suggested activities at the end that are meant to help people break up their routine and help their brain think a little more than usual.

The puzzles and the activities are separated into three levels with the first level the easiest. There is also information on maintaining and increasing brain health. A lot of that information is the same as keeping the rest of your body healthy, like eating right, sleeping well, and getting exercise.

I definitely recommend The Ultimate Memory Activity Book for those suffering from more than normal memory loss due to aging, or those who aren’t used to doing word or number puzzles.

About the Puzzle Author

Back in 1980, I got interested in constructing crossword puzzles. I managed to get half dozen daily puzzles published in the New York Times. Then, I turned to generating crosswords for weekly newspapers, and built up a list of about 75 or so subscribers in the mid 1980s.

I had to give up constructing at that time because of other professional commitments, but several years ago got back into it.

I enjoy constructing because it is a great challenge: It tests my vocabulary, requires tenacity in finding fits for all the squares in the grid, and it leads to occasional bursts of inspiration in finding my way out a of corner I’ve figuratively painted myself into. I feel a real sense of accomplishment (and relief) when finally the grid is completed.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve always enjoyed puzzles of all different kinds, so I thought this would be a fun book to try. I’m not quite sure “fun” is the right word because these puzzles really tax my brain! I will be working on the puzzles in this book for a long time.

There are a variety of puzzles: crosswords, word searches, sudokus, calcudokus, kakuros, cryptograms. Some are separated into warm-up, tough, and hard-core. They’re all hard, though!

Even the word searches, which I haven’t done in years because they’re always too easy for me, are difficult. You’re given clues to the words you’re searching for and some of the puzzles don’t have straight line words but snaking words!

If you’re looking for challenging puzzles, this is definitely the puzzle book you’re looking for. This is not one I’ll complete in a few days, and I can’t wait to get back to it.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve always enjoyed puzzles and my favorite are logic puzzles, so of course I wanted this book! It contains sudoku, mazyu, nongram, calcudoko, logic grids, and cryptic puzzles.

Sudoku is okay but I’ve gotten kind of bored with them. I’ve never done Masyu, and I found these to be very difficult for my brain. They’re really a challenge for me. I haven’t done Nonograms either but I like them. They’re a bit challenging but fun. The Calcudoku and Cryptic Puzzle can also get challenging when I do the bigger ones, but I also like them. My absolute favorite has been Logic Grids since I started doing puzzles.

The puzzles in Tricky Logic Puzzles for Adults is one of the best puzzle books I’ve gotten in a long time. They’re both challenging and fun. I’ve worked on some of them, but I still have more to do. They’re a great way to spend a little time in between reading books!

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from Callisto Publishing. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

One of the reasons I got this book was because it’s large print and it’s easy on my eyes. I’ve always liked to do puzzles, and a plus is that different kinds of puzzles help my brain fight dementia.

Brain Teasers for Adults is separated into three sections by difficulty. I found it interesting that I breezed through the first section until I got to the riddles, which I’ve always had trouble with, and I had to really think about those. As the levels increased by difficulty, I had to spend a little more time on each puzzle. Fun and learning! My favorite way to pass the time.

Before the answers in the back of the book, there is a section with clues for each puzzle, so if you get stuck, you can look at the clues before giving up.

If you enjoy doing puzzles, Brain Teasers for Adults is for you. If you don’t have experience doing puzzles, maybe this is the book to start with since it starts easy and gets more difficult AND it has clues to help you. It’s always good to give your brain a new challenge.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from Callisto. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

The Large Print Bible Word Search Book is like any other word search book but the large print makes it a lot easier to work the puzzles. Each puzzle correlates to a book in the Bible and uses about 30 words from that book.

I make it a point to try to do different types of puzzles to keep my brain sharp and to help avoid dementia as is says in the introduction. These word searches are easy and fun to do which is an added plus.
