My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have successfully used visualization in the past so Visualization for Success intrigued me. It gives a step by step approach to visualization to help you get what you want out of life.

Most of the steps start with relaxation breathing which is easy to learn if you don’t have experience with it. A definition is given if needed. I’ve learned several techniques but all that is needed is taking a deep breath and holding it for a few seconds.

I like how Visualization for Success is broken down into three parts: positivity, relationships, and goals. Each section has several detailed exercises to assist you visualizing and achieving your goals. This is more of a reference that you’ll go back to over and over.

I definitely recommend Visualization for Success for anyone who is interested in improving themselves.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I wish I’d had this book when I was a first-time parent. Luckily, I had the help of my mom and her mom and they gave me good advice. Now that I’m a first-time grandparent, I’m going to recommend this book on to my son in hopes that he’ll take the time to read it.

We’re Parenting a Toddler! has everything you can think of with a little humor added with the author’s personal stories. It’s based on the author’s experiences and not any scientific data, so that needs to be kept in the back of your mind. If it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. Every child is unique.

The book is divided into three sections, the first of which is about communication, discipline, structure and boundaries, and consistency. All of these are important and if you read this before a baby becomes a toddler and decide how you want to deal with your toddler, more power to you!

The second section is all about the daily routine and the third section is about things that aren’t routine, such as going on a trip with a toddler. I like the tips and insights in these sections as well as regulating your own emotions and moods. Especially helpful are the parts that explain what’s inside your toddler’s mind.

Overall, We’re Parenting a Toddler! is a good resource for parents of toddlers to keep on hand. It says it’s for first-time parents, but it’s a good reminder for parents who have a second or third child, too.

Teetering On Disaster

Description

Michaela Renee Johnson was just 12 years old in 1992 when a financial slump forced her family to move from an upscale area in Sacramento to a 27-ft trailer in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, with no electricity or running water — so no Nintendo or MTV. It wasn’t exactly the life that every adolescent dreams of, but it was, in fact, their reality.

Michaela chronicles these formative years (and beyond) in her often humorous, constantly candid true story, Teetering on Disaster. As the young Michaela navigates her way through the inherently melodramatic teen years, she must come to terms with relieving herself in the woods, shaving with a 10-cent borrowed razor in an irrigation ditch and taking what she called “bird baths” with a jug of water.

Somehow, in the midst of disorienting change, she learned to focus on what she was gaining instead of what she had lost. And in the end, she gained profound wisdom about her family and the world around her, and uncovered the truth about her own ability to thrive in the face of life’s inconveniences.

But the effects of her unorthodox upbringing don’t end at adulthood, and Teetering takes readers along as a grown Michaela stumbles upon a few “Mr. Right Nows,” gets divorced in her twenties, and ends up right back where she started: a small mountain town in the middle of nowhere.

Teetering on Disaster is a heartfelt, coming-of-age story written to inspire others to live a courageous life of authenticity and to speak their truth with grace. Michaela’s book is an unapologetically honest, authentic tale that will make readers laugh out loud and cry — sometimes at the same time.

Guest Review by Linda Lu

A joyful, thought-provoking and uproariously funny good read. I love when I find a book that just makes me feel like I am having a great time reading. Michaela Renee Johnson wrote a memoir here that, in a different author’s hands, might have come across as kind of sad and maudlin but she made it fun and life-affirming. With the talent that she has for picking out the silver-lining in every situation, I can only imagine that she is really great to have around in real life.

Here’s what happened, Johnson’s family owned a small construction business that made them comfortably middle class in early 90’s southern California. Until the stock market collapsed on Black Monday. Suddenly Johnson’s parents were selling everything (including their house) in order to avoid filing for bankruptcy. One day, Johnson arrives home to find a “27-foot Terry trailer” waiting in the driveway. Her parents had bought it with the intention that their whole 5-person family would live inside it for the foreseeable future. Of course, Johnson is horrified by the idea of living full-time in what is, essentially an RV.

What follows are faithful re-tellings of her strange and unique childhood and how it affected her adult life in unexpected ways. There was no part of this memoir that I did not love but I especially loved Johnson’s absolutely crazy childhood stories. At one point, her family lived without water or electricity in the trailer which meant that she had to do things like going to the bathroom in the woods and learning to shave her legs in an irrigation ditch. I couldn’t believe how her family managed to survive during such hard times and not kill each other. I can’t even imagine going through something like that with my own family. Yikes! I highly recommend this book if you like a good, funny, crazy memoir! This is a 5 star read.

“Throughout Michaela’s autobiographical story, she sent me through a rollercoaster of emotions. Not being able to identify on a personal level with the extreme of both of her situations in each half of the book, I still felt that as a human being I could sympathize, and it helped me to have a greater appreciation for what I currently have. Michaela’s story had me happy at all of her highs, sad at the many losses, and emotionally confused concerning her relationships. What it all boils down to is that at times, being a grown-up, and a female, can be very difficult.”- Rachel Dehning, San Francisco Book Review

“I really did laugh, and cry, while reading this. I was able to relate to the experiences of the author, even though we are twenty years apart in age; the early years… amazing experience that family went through, creating a precious, ever-lasting bond between a young woman, her parents, and her two younger brothers.
Her humor and positive attitude, her extreme frankness and humility (touched with a bit of narcissism) draw one to her.
She, like the sweet doggies of the Great North, she is ever pleasing, forgiving, hard-working and never tiring. She relates to the dog world so much, calling herself Rio’s mom, that she probably won’t mind being compared to a canine. 🙂 Being a dog lover myself, I think of it as the highest compliment!
I wish I had her strength, her sense of humor and wit, her looks, her intelligence, her resilience and determination; I wish I had her ability to seems so Angie-Jolie-transcendent, and yet admit to being a little Grace-Adler-(Debra Messing)-ordinary … striking and competent, clumsy and insecure… God bless her!!
I wanna go through struggles and come out looking like Michaela Renee! One you just can’t help admiring.
Very inspiring. You just know she is going to be JUST FINE! She has spirit! She has spunk! And she IS LOVED… she will never be alone 😉 When she least expects it her true love will curl up next to her, and he won’t have four legs!”- Marcy Lundy, Goodreads

“Laugh out loud funny, interesting & touching. Teetering on Disaster is like a Modern day “Swiss Family Robinson meets Jerry Springer”! You could know the entirety of the story and Kayla’s writing style, quick wit, raw truth still entertains. If she wrote recipe’s we wouldn’t need the food channel. Buy it for every chick you know and earn major points, but make sure you keep one copy for yourself! Not just a “chick” book – man up and enjoy!”-Rick Harris, Amazon

Guest Review by Sol A.

‘Millennial Samurai,’ by George Chanos is a self-help book like no other. This book almost functions like a set of small, bite-size pieces of wisdom that you are able to read quickly and carry with you throughout your day. Many of the chapters get to the point quickly, which is a feature that I greatly appreciate, having read a lot of self-help books that devolved into self-aggrandizing rhetoric all too quickly. And they leave you with strong, impactful sentences that you can easily remember. Take the chapter on ‘Failure’ that gave me the gem, “Having a great character does not require that you never make mistakes.’ That’s a sentence that I know is going to stay with me for a while and help me when I feel that I have messed something up.

Chanos gives advice from everything to stress, courage, compassion and even things you normally would never see in a self-help book like sections on police corruption and student debt. The latter being my favorite section in the entire book. I don’t think I know a single millennial without student debt and, therefore, we can all use this book. This type of knowledge and wisdom can only come from someone who clearly has a lot of experience in the world and someone who enjoys sharing said experience.

Reading this book, I almost felt like I was getting a debt-free college course in life management. It was like Chanos knew exactly what I needed to hear about everything that is going on in my life. He really did tap into the millennial mindset with the political and internet sections of the book, which I greatly enjoyed. All in all, I would recommend this to any of my millennial friends who are looking for a little guidance in their lives and are unsure where to turn to get it. I give this book a highly recommend 5 out of 5.

Praise for Millennial Samurai

“Millennial Samurai is an everything book for everyone. The first half is a pleasant refresher of “the important stuff” with beautiful quotes from outstanding people and clear and concise text from Chanos to absorb and reflect on. The 2nd half will blow your mind, give you new tools/apps, and give you conversational fuel and advice to take action on to make life more fulfilling. This is the kind of book you wish every school had in the classroom for students to reflect on with each other and their teachers. I just became an Uncle recently and look forward to reading this to my nephew when he’s of age. With the internet being so massive it’s so nice to own something that has all the essentials of today all in one place.”-Phil A., Amazon

“This book is a life-changer! It is filled with truths that will last forever. Destined to be a classic and a must for every human being on earth to read, absorb and put into action. This is Napoleon Hill’s 17 Laws Of Success for millennials! An extraordinary piece of art. This is a masterpiece. Great work to you George!”- Extraordinarily You, Amazon

“I have finally found a book that the author is sympathetic with not only my age group but also that anyone who can relate to the way to success in the day and age of millenialism, and how to use what we know nowadays to be ahead and get far. I am astonished at the fast pages and quick read in each chapter since it made it easier for my attention to get a grip on it. “-Tina Chau, Amazon

Book Review: Writing the Entertaining Story by Wendy S. Delmater

“Wendy S. Delmater has a lot of balls to title her book Writing the Entertaining Story. What in the world makes her think that she knows the secret? …Editing. That’s what Wendy brings to Writing the Entertaining Story. She has read and evaluated, compared and analyzed reams and reams of unpublished work in her efforts to pick winners from the slush pile. Her advice in this book is practical, immediately applicable, and comes from her hard-earned time in the editor’s seat.” – from the foreword by James Van Pelt

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I am not a writer even though I have a lot of stories in my head. Maybe, someday, I’ll attempt to put them on paper, which is why this book interested me. It’s full of information for a beginning writer. Wendy points out the do’s and don’t’s for telling a good story based on her years of experience as an editor and writer.

The second half of the book is for once you have the story written. She explains agents, the different types of publication, editing, advertising, and more. There’s so much more involved in writing a book than just getting the story on paper!

This is a great resource for anyone who wants to embark into the world of being an author.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from Callisto Publisher’s Club. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Although it says that this book is for ages 9-12, I think that teens and adults would benefit more unless the 9-12-year-old has some artistic talent. I have no artistic talent, and I practiced on the first activity for quite a while. I still have a lot of work to do, but I’m going to learn how to draw a person no matter how long it takes!

Not only does Figure Drawing for kids teach how to draw people, but it goes into the details of how to show movement, make a scene, draw faces and much more. Shading is discussed also. It has always fascinated me how an artist knows how to use shading to make an illustration look completely different.

I recommend Figure Drawing for Kids for anyone of any age who wants to learn more about drawing people.

I loved this book!  I feel more upbeat, stronger, in control of my life and that I’m moving in the right direction having tried out some of Scott’s healthy & delicious recipes.

This cookbook also has really useful nutritional advice to help raise your energy levels & improve your fitness.  It talks about the foods we should eat and when we should eat them.  It breaks food down into the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, and offers useful guidance and practical tips, along with healthy recipes for readers to cook themselves into fitness which involves having the correct balance of nutrition, the proper mindset and approach to healthy eating, and the right workout programme.

Staying healthy is all about how much you eat, when you eat, the quality of what you eat, and understanding and putting into practice the nutritional and culinary expertise provided in this useful book.

I’d recommend this book to anyone, not just couch potatoes, as it improves both your self-confidence as well as your physique.  It’s certainly livened up my life in more ways than one!”

The year is 1935. Art connoisseur-cum-private investigator Felix Underwood is asked to find out what happened to Reggie Soper, a young solicitor who disappeared without trace 15 years previously.

Determined to help Charlotte Soper find her missing father, his investigations take him from the comfort of his Bond Street art emporium to the wilds of Yorkshire where he finds his presence among the village locals not entirely welcome.

Undaunted by the wall of silence surrounding him, he continues his search, finding a friend and helpmeet in Mavis, the landlady of the inn where he lodges. Together, they uncover a nightmare; the full horror of which nothing has prepared them for.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this if enjoy is the right word. It is very sad and quite horrifying really but brilliantly written. Full of twists and turns, I found I could not stop reading it until I knew the outcome. The author always makes her novels so readable. You start to feel you really know the characters. The story for me really highlights how a simple lie can cause ripples in peoples’ lives and no man is an island. I did think about karma with certain characters. I disliked Elsa intensely what an awful woman. I really liked Reggie’s character he came over as a lovely man. If looking for a good gripping read I would highly recommend this book.”

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from Callista Publisher’s Club. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I don’t read many self help books these days because they often repeat the same idea in many ways and include a lot of extraneous info just to make their idea long enough to make into a book (in my opinion). 5-Minute Focus doesn’t do that, but, unfortunately, it was still a self help book that doesn’t help me.

5-Minute Focus teaches how to keep yourself focused when performing any task. It is written well, and it gives 75 exercises to help you do that. It does incorporate some meditation and exercises and some of the tips within the exercises can be helpful, but I don’t need to prepare myself to be an alert driver. And I don’t care what I do, a boring meeting won’t be less boring with tips given by anyone.

Those who haven’t learned how to de-stress or to survive tedious or boring tasks will probably benefit from 5-Minute Focus. Fortunately, it’s something I learned long ago.
