My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Being a small business owner, I was hoping that this book would give me some ideas. In fact, I was able to print the forms off and we’re going to be working on them over the next couple of weeks. My husband isn’t much for using software so being able to do this on paper will really help.

One thing I really like is the section on the Business Plan. I’ve always felt intimidated by Business Plans but this worksheet is great! There are other sections that are just as helpful for small businesses and I definitely recommend The Joyful Business Planner for any small business owner, especially if you’d like a simple plan on paper to help grow your business.

Book Excerpt

I am in the industry of spiritual empowerment and transformation.  I got started in this industry many years ago by accident, so to speak.  By all indicators, I was living a good life.  I had focused all of energies on advancing my career in order to adequately raise my children.  My children were young adults, and after they launched into their lives, I finally had an opportunity to sit and think; hey what would I like to do with myself now?  What would I like to do in the next stage of my life?

I had to overcome a lot of limiting beliefs in order to move forward after my divorce.  All the limiting beliefs that I had to address while I was moving up the career ladder and lost what I believed to be my dream job.  In particular the fear of failure was at the core.  The steps that I had to take repeatedly to eradicate the fear of failure and authentically live the out-of-the-box life I believe I was created to live.  I decided to turn this journey into a business, and that how Kick Boxing Believers, LLC, was born.  Along the way, I have mentored hundreds of women to do the same thing that I have done and live an authentic, transformed, and fearless, out-of-the-box life!

This book is primarily for women who have already achieved success in various areas of their lives, but they want more.  They want to live a more out-of-the-box life instead of a life others expect them to live.  They dream about doing more with their lives and creating opportunities.  After reading this book, I want you to take away that failure in not something to be feared or avoided.  Actually, when it’s viewed through the lens of faith, failure is simply a footstool to living an out-of-the-box life.

There a better way to look at fear: embrace it and use it to your advantage instead of your disadvantage.  For example, when I lost what I felt was my dream job, the situation looked like failure to me, and I also felt like a complete failure.  I had worked so hard to get that position.  After grieving over the loss, I turned to my faith and took another look at the failure I was experiencing.  This failure was merely a stepping stone to my next level of living the more authentic out-of-the-box life I desired.  Had I not lost that job, I wouldn’t have started my business.  So failure is just part of the course.

My Review

I chose to read this e-book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

This book is more like an advertisement for Kick Boxing Believers, LLC. L.T. Lewis does give the basics of her S.H.I.N.E. and Win philosophy but not much in the way of how to accomplish these basics. She explains that we must face our fears and use them to our advantage.

As far as it goes, S.H.I.N.E. and Win is good but it is more of a precursor of what you can expect if you are going to follow through and get additional guidance from the author.

Book Review: The Skeleton Code by Alla Campanella & Ken Massey

10 Jan

Skeletons. We all have them hidden away, usually in an overcrowded and unsecure closet where they are likely to rattle loose. As prisoners, their prime directive is to break their shackles and haunt our happiness.

Alla Campanella and Ken Massey have discovered and interviewed many of these free and feral skeletons and the people who didn’t guard them well. Their true stories and raw realities are found in these pages. You will laugh at many, cringe at some, be in awe of others, disbelieve a few, and be challenged by all.

The Skeleton Code is a satirical and humorous look at the many ways we protect our public personas by closeting our personal secrets. The satire helps us wade into the dark and difficult waters of that famous river called Denial.

You can use the facetious strategies of The Code to maximize a self-deluding way of life, but Alla and Ken hope you will look into this mirror and discover The Skeleton Cure, which is a life of deeper self-honesty and transparency.

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

The Skeleton Code is a different kind of self-help book. It is full of satire and humorous stories intended to explain how the skeletons in our closets can affect us and how many of us will do anything to keep those skeletons hidden.

The last two chapters take a serious turn. Chapter 10 explains how toxic keeping secrets can be, causing both physical and psychological problems. Chapter 11 is about the Skeleton Cure and explains how to face your fears and how you can eventually become your truest self. Not having skeletons in the closet is the best way to live. With no skeletons, you can’t fear that someone will open that closet door and find out your secrets.

The authors came up with a fun way to address a serious topic. By using satire and humor, their book isn’t just another boring self-help book, but one that is more enjoyable to read while hopefully learning something about yourself.

Book Review & Giveaway: Dance Diaries: Ballroom Budgeting: How I Afford to Dance (Book #2) by The Girl with the Tree Tattoo

4 Oct

Anyone who tries ballroom dancing quickly learns how expensive it can be. From private lessons to competition fees, the monetary cost of being a ballroom student can quickly skyrocket. In my experience, the high cost is the most frequently cited reason for quitting dance. It shouldn’t be that way!

I live paycheck to paycheck, carry credit card debt, and still dance and compete in pro-am ballroom. In my first two years as a pro-am competitive ballroom dancer, I entered five competitions, had the money reserved for two additional events, and, at the same time, reduced my credit card debt by almost 50%!

I wrote this second book in my Dance Diaries series out of a desire to help my fellow struggling dancers do the same thing. From budgeting basics to specific tips on how to save on ballroom dancing, in Ballroom Budgeting, I share exactly how I dance and compete in ballroom while living paycheck to paycheck AND reducing debt! I even provide the tools I use to help you start organizing your own ballroom budget right away! Stop stressing over the cost and focus on what is important – the dancing!

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Dance Diaries: Ballroom Budgeting: How I Afford to Dance is about budgeting and planning your money so that you can pursue your passion. It’s obvious that the author loves ballroom dancing and, although it’s very expensive, she has figured out how to be able to afford it.

There is a lot of information in Dance Diaries: Ballroom Budgeting: How I Afford to Dance. It’s not only for people who want to ballroom dance but for anyone who wants to pursue a passion that is expensive. Kate goes into detail about how she has budgeted and sacrificed in order to pursue ballroom dancing. She also shows actual examples of her budgets and explains how to deal with those unforeseen expenses such as car repairs.

I recommend this book for anyone who is living paycheck to paycheck like Kate but wants to pursue ballroom dancing or any other passion that they think they can’t afford. If it’s important enough, she proves that there are ways to accomplish it.

About the Author

Katie is known as the Girl with the Tree Tattoo because of the tree of life tattoo that covers her entire back. She has been taking ballroom dancing lessons since December 2012 and competing in pro-am ballroom competitions since April 2014. It was through ballroom dance that Katie started to discover who she really was and what she was capable of, despite the demons of fear, self-doubt, and anxiety that live in her head. Through sharing her own experiences, Katie hopes to lead others to experience the amazing effect ballroom dancing can have on a life.

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Most self help books tend to bore me because they repeat the same information over and over, changing a few words here or there. I’ve never known if this was to get the point across or to make the information appear to be enough to put in a book. Either way…boring! This book is not like that at all. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not just short but it it gets right to the point.

Each of the five truths has its own chapter. The truth is presented, explained briefly but eloquently, and the end of the chapter reiterates the truth with along with a supportive phrase or sentence. It’s the best self help book I’ve read and, even better, if you want to read the key points again you can just sit down and read the whole book again in 5 or 10 minutes.

Guest Post: Transforming Barriers into Success by Zaheen Nanji, author of The Resilience Reflex

14 Dec

Did you know that there are 8 Keys to Transforming Barriers into Success in Life and Business?

We all experience challenging life experiences such as a death of a loved one, loss of a job, serious illness, and other traumatic events. It is how we deal and adapt to life’s ups and downs that move us forward instead of backwards. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the ability to adapt well to adapt well over time to life-changing situations and stressful conditions.

Resilience is the process of adapting well and moving forward in the face of adversity, stress and tragedy. Resilience teaches individuals how to pivot from setbacks to success. Never giving up on myself was an important factor for me to overcome many struggles throughout my life. I have bounced back from not being able to speak because of my speech impediment, and from moving halfway across the world without my parents at the age of 15. I lived in country ravished by war called Africa. At age 5, an incident left me with a speech impediment-stuttering. I was also able to overcome a long battle with food, once being 40 pounds overweight.

Yet today I managed, and completed my education in Nutrition & Food Science, and Environmental Health. I work fulltime in the health field, manage two businesses – a wellness centre and my professional speaking career. This journey led me to write two books and become an award-winning author.

Both of my books, Attract Your Ideal Weight: 8 Secrets of People Who Lose Weight and Keep It Off, and my new release The Resilience Reflex dives into the behavior changes and mindset of people who have been successful and provides real-life experiences of people who have overcome their obstacles.

The Resilience Reflex took seven months to write and has plenty of real life stories from individuals who are resilient. Reading this book will inspire you to find solutions to your most pressing personal and professional challenges. The book includes self-assessment questions that help the reader discover their limiting patterns and how they can change them. This book provides everyday coping skills; developing resilience helps people in life and business.

Someone once said, “Life is not measured by how many times I fall down, but by how many times I’m able to get up.” Amazon Bestseller The Resilience Reflex is available on Amazon and other retailers. When you order the book you receive as a bonus gift The Resilience Reflex Workbook – 3 Powerful Steps to Get Unstuck and Bounce Back, this is available at http://zaheennanji.com/.

Book Excerpt

flatCuriosity is borne from our attitude, and psychologists define attitude as a learned tendency to evaluate things in a certain way. When resilient individuals approach a difficult situation, they have an attitude of being curious, patient, and optimistic, thereby diminishing fear of change.

Attitudes are also formed as a direct result of our experiences, values, and beliefs, and these guide our behaviours and actions toward a response. You’ve heard people say, “Have a positive attitude,” but what does that mean? When I research resiliency in individuals, I have found that positive attitude encompasses the following traits that are guided by values and beliefs:

  • Creative and solution-thinking…

Guest Post by Yvette Bethel, author of E.Q. Librium

25 Sep

Bullying does not just start at school. Experts say it’s a real problem in the workplace, too.

Yvette_Imagerymedia_IMG_9759_smallAuthor Yvette Bethel knows she can help individuals successfully learn how to navigate the complexities of office drama by developing your E.Q. Librium.

I was employed by a Fortune 500 company for about twenty years before I became an independent business consultant at Organizational Soul.  In my role as an employee, I was exposed to many circumstances and I was especially fascinated by the supportive and not so supportive behaviors employees exhibited toward each other – regardless of the level within the organizational hierarchy.  Every time I witnessed any of these behaviors I added them to a list I created highlighting the not so supportive behaviors. I called the list, “The Games People Play at Work”.

After looking at this list repeatedly, I took a step back in an effort to understand the common thread, and after analysis and extensive research I stumbled onto emotional intelligence, a science that not only explained the behaviors but also provided the practical skills executives, business owners, managers and employees need to build their emotional quotients and improve engagement.

For me this was an exciting find so I took steps to learn more about emotional intelligence to improve myself, then coach and train others to develop themselves.

As a speaker, emotional intelligence practitioner, trainer, lecturer, business and HR consultant my primary aim is to help organizations to position themselves for growth while building employee engagement. My desire to help employees, students navigate difficult office interactions, transform themselves and improve their quality of life motivated me to start writing my book and to create a interactive emotional intelligence learning solution video.

EQLib-BookCover-HiRezsmallMy book, E.Q. Librium Unleash the Power of Your Emotional Intelligence: A Proven Path to Career Success helps you to develop your ability to use your Emotional Quotient (EQ) to achieve self-regulation in emotionally charged situations. This helps you better position yourself to achieve your career goals. The more you develop your skills to navigate your emotions, the more effective you will be at managing yourself in emotionally charged situations. The book over 25 real-life workplace scenarios leaders and employees will encounter. This book includes inspiring success stories, easy to understand solutions to difficult situations, inspirational quotes, and self-assessment questions. E.Q. Librium is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my website.

Book Excerpt

“There are people who believe that when you become emotionally intelligent, you should be nice all the time. This is a complete misconception. I had a student once who stated that no matter what she did, her emotions made it difficult for her to be nice. I told her that it was more important to express herself appropriately using emotional intelligence than to be nice. I went on to explain that sometimes it is necessary to disagree or be firm, while at other times, it is appropriate to be nice or agreeable. Emotional intelligence provides the skills you need to help you understand that it is okay to disagree and when you do, how to do it constructively.”

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Not only does this book offer different techniques to cope with anxiety but it also explains how to figure out what is causing the anxiety so that you can deal with it one worry at a time.

I can see how one of the techniques, the 54321 method, would be helpful. It refocuses your attention so you can use it any time you’re feeling anxious, even in a room full of people. I prefer self hypnosis, which is also explained. I haven’t practiced it in a long time but plan on starting again after reading Overcoming Anxiety. It can have amazing calming qualities. In fact, when my roommate and I started doing self hypmosis years ago, everyone thought we were on drugs because we were both so calm at work!

If you’re looking for some help coping with anxiety or excessive worrying, this is a good resource that is easy to understand with techniques that are explained well.

My Review:

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

There are so many weight loss books available that are too long and difficult to get through. Attract Your Ideal Weight is the opposite of those. It’s short and easy to read.

This book discusses 8 secrets of people who have lost weight and kept it off. Stories of people who have accomplished this are also included. These “secrets” are behavioral changes that are common sense but not necessarily easy to accomplish. If they were, we’d all be thin.

The best thing about this book is the end which contains Daily Intentions. Actually sitting down and writing what is going on daily is important because it helps to keep you focused and motivated.
