My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’m not sure what I expected when I agreed to read this book but I wasn’t expecting what I got. Life and Death Behind the Brick and Razor: Code Red Diamond is different but I like different. It’s not only an autobiography but a look at many of the issues of today as well as a guide to living a healthier and more productive life.

Dr. Alexis’s stories are entertaining but more importantly, many of them are educational. It also gives the reader a view of some of the sad and crazy things that go on in prisons.

This would be a good book for anyone to read but a great book for young people who could be at risk.

Isaac Alexis, MD, completed an internship in trauma surgery at Cornell University at New York Hospital of Queens, and he cross-trained in family medicine and anesthesiology. Dr. Alexis served as medical director at the Department of Justice as well as director of infection control and chair of the quality improvement medical committee. He has several years of correctional medicine under his belt.Dr. Alexis’s book Life and Death behind the Brick and Razor-Code Red Diamond relays his experiences as a physician in correctional medical facilities while also challenging teenagers to make better decisions to avoid the perils of incarceration.

When I was a young girl, my much older cousin killed himself.  My mother was the one to tell me.  She agreed that it was quite sad and said that it happens sometimes.  She told me that is a really selfish act but some people just couldn’t survive, for whatever reason. 

I don’t think most have many answers or insight, so how do you explain suicide to a young child?  I think that if my mother had this book, ‘Making Peace With Suicide,’ she may have been able to better explain it to me and perhaps been better equipped to help my aunt and uncle.

The author, Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D., brings her experience, insight, and compassion to assist people in coping with suicide and attempts at suicide.  The book is well written and easy to understand so it is really for anyone.  I also think it should be required reading for those entering a profession that counsels people on suicide, be it a psychologist, doctor, or clergy, etc.

All these years later, the death of my cousin is still with me.  I find a lot of comfort in what Ms. McDowell shares in her book and will turn to it again if the occasion should arise.  I hope not but you never know what life will bring you and when.  I highly recommend this book and give it five stars!

The Many Faces of Suicide

Suicide is many things.

Suicide is not a sin, from my point of view. Some religions espouse hellfire and damnation; others ponder the intention of the suicidal individual. Since I see all of us on a path to open our hearts, expand our consciousness, and operate from our Best or Higher Selves, I do not believe that the Divine—in any form or moniker— is looking to punish us for being human. The Divine is all about love—unconditional love—and helping each of us find the pathway to that conclusion. Individuals who take their life by suicide are not punished. (Quite frankly, haven’t they lived through enough hell?) That is old school thinking to me. If you believe in heaven, they are in heaven. If you believe in past lives, their souls are being readied for their next assignment. Where we all can agree is that the soul has moved out of the constraints and limitations of the 3D world and moved to another nonphysical dimension.

Suicide is not a crime. (For the record, suicide is no longer illegal in the Western world, where suicide has been decriminalized. There are, however, legal ramifications to assisted suicide and the like).

Some say the weak choose suicide. I disagree. “Weak” is not the operative word here.

Suicide can be a tipping point of pain or shame, a plea for help, a response to mental illness and haywire neurochemistry, as well as the last gasp of despair and resignation. Suicide can also be an impulsive mistake, a planned ending of life, a shredded soul, the death of the ego, or the ultimate act of rage and fury. (That rage and fury is often our much wounded child-self battling mightily for control or screaming in enormous pain.)

Suicide can be a choice that we may or may not understand on the 3D level, such as a teaching tool for our loved ones or choosing to do profound work from the Other Side.

Suicide can be a part of our destiny, our soul path toward healing.

Suicide can be the result of soul loss.

Suicide can be a game-changer. After the loss of a loved one to suicide, your view on life changes. Life becomes more fragile, more precious, and more cherished. This holds true for those who have attempted suicide as well. For them, the attempt may lead to a spurt of fresh energy and a re-engagement with life.

And suicide is definitely a societal, and, therefore, a political and moral issue. We human beings—and our organizations, corporations, or governments—can be terribly self-serving, ruthless, abusive, and tyrannical toward others. Acts of violence, war, and exploitation damage and destroy the very souls of our being. We lose ourselves and the meaning of our lives. Suicidal thoughts and actions are a part of the collateral damage of these polarizations.

Further, suicide can be a powerful teacher. It teaches us the great lesson of compassion. It opens us in ways we never thought possible. Suicide asks us to accept a loved one’s choice and circumstance. Suicide asks us to forgive ourselves for our perceived wrongdoings, including our inability to prevent our loved one from harm. Suicide requires us to face our guilt, anger, and shame. Suicide asks us to accept the unacceptable, the inconceivable, the horrific, and make peace with it. Suicide asks us to live with an open heart. This means no judgment, no castigation, and no punishment. We see one another through a lens of acceptance. We allow each other to be who we are—in all of our shortcomings and crazy-making ways as well as all of our idiosyncratic wonderfulness.

Want to fix your diabetes?  In this book, I share with my diabetic and borderline diabetic readers that they have the power to reverse or prevent diabetes simply by changing their diets.  It starts with how you think.  By removing old beliefs to new ones that better serve you, the path to recovery from diabetes can be that simple.  Once I provide the rationale for changing old beliefs to more productive ones, I then share with you ways to stay motivated as you journey to a new way of eating.  You are then given a deeper understanding of why so many people have diabetes.  This knowledge will allow you to remove thoughts you may have had where you blamed yourself for having diabetes.  You are then given tips on how to maintain the motivation needed to make a successful transition to a diabetic friendly diet.  Additional knowledge is given about the many complications which could occur when this condition is not well controlled.  Empowered with the understanding of why diabetes occurs and its many complications, you will be given a case for changing how diabetes is treated.  This is done by changing the focus of diabetes management away from the symptoms (elevated glucose), which is how we currently manage this condition, to treating the cause of the disease (insulin resistance).  You are then given the rationale for increasing healthy fats in your diets while reducing starchy carbohydrates and processed foods.  Once this is explained, examples of foods that should be considered for smoothies, snacks, and dinner are given so you will know how to choose foods which are best.   Finally, tips on how to avoid being fooled by marketing labels and claims of so-called healthy foods provide the framework by which great dietary choices can be made.  This new approach to reversing diabetes with diet will reverse diabetes in nearly anyone willing to make these simple lifestyle changes.

I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes so I wanted to see what Dr. Hampton had to say. My doctor wanted to put me on medicine right away but my blood sugar wasn’t real high or out of control so I said I wanted to try changing my diet first to see how that would work. I immediately went to a low carb diet and it’s working. After reading this book, I have found other ways I can change my eating habits to help with the diabetes as well as weight loss. I especially like the snack ideas that he gave.

There is a lot of information in this book that is important for diabetics to know such as food labels and what foods to avoid as well as other choices. There is a chapter on fasting and one of the types of fasting is close to what I do now, so I’m going to change my eating habits just a little bit and my body should thank me for it. 

Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes is a book that anyone who is diabetic or anyone who lives with a diabetic should read. The first couple of chapters are typical self help motivating yourself, etc., but the rest of the book is essential. Since I found out I had diabetes, I can’t believe how many people have said that they take medicine for it so they can eat anything they want. NO!! Those people need this book!!

INSULIN RESISTANCE AND HOW TO REVERSE IT

Now that you understand that Type 2 diabetes is about insulin resistance, it’s time to rethink how you are approaching your treatment for this condition. Most doctors and their patients focus on reducing the blood glucose values and if they’re successful they feel they’re controlling diabetes. But I asked myself if we were fixing the core problem or simply treating the symptoms. After reflecting on the question, I realized the core problem may not be elevated blood glucose levels after all. High glucose values are simply a symptom of diabetes. So where should the focus be?

The answer is insulin resistance. By focusing on this, you could achieve much better results, since this is essential to fixing your diabetes. Let’s use an analogy to help think about this concept in a different way. If I see a patient who presents with a painful throat, red and swollen tonsils, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and a fever, I know I likely have a patient who needs to be treated for strep throat. In order to solve his problem, I will need to give him an antibiotic to fight the bacteria that is causing his symptoms. If I gave this patient Tylenol, I would only be treating his symptoms, and would likely end up with a patient who feels better but isn’t really cured.

This is what we are doing with our diabetes treatment. This is also likely the reason we consider this a progressively worsening disease. By shifting your focus, you will find a path to the solution you’ve been searching for. Why focus on insulin resistance? Because when insulin levels are high due to resistance, lipolysis (fat breakdown) is inhibited, sensitive arteries throughout the body are exposed to damaging higher levels of glucose, muscle protein synthesis is reduced, and glycogen-filled cells are converted to fat for storage.

Back Pocket Coach is a communication resource that would be mostly useful for coaches or business leaders. It lists 33 strategies on how to effectively communicate with others. After listing the 33 strategies, the next section gives examples of situations when to use different strategies. For example, when you need to buy time, there are three strategies that apply:

9.  Let me take some time to consider this
19. Hold that thought!
This would be the most helpful section when trying to use new effective strategies.
The last section is the Game Changing Conversations process that prepares you for a difficult or high stakes conversation. It has a worksheet for you to complete to help you prepare for the challenges that may occur and to help you have a successful outcome.
I don’t see that the Back Pocket Coach would be real helpful in personal communication often but it would be a frequent, helpful resource for anyone who is a leader or coach in a business setting.
