Lucky Penny (Book 3)

A year after her acquittal on fraud charges, former financial analyst Miranda Vaughn is finally getting her life back. Not only does she have a chance for romance with her sexy neighbor, FBI Agent Jake Barnes, but she’s also got a new job…one that’s taking her to a vacation paradise!
Perched above the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe, the Whispering Pines Resort & Spa is a local landmark and a popular destination for the rich and famous who are stressed out from being rich and famous. And down on the water’s edge is the Lucky Penny Casino—an abandoned shell of a once-stylish casino. Max Emmerson, the owner of the Whispering Pines Resort, used to own the Lucky Penny, and he wants it back. Miranda’s job is to get Max’s finances in order so he can borrow the money to buy the casino, and make sure nothing jeopardizes his gaming license. Easy, right?
But the nice boring accounting job spirals out of control with the addition of a Hollywood film crew, an underground gambling ring, and Jake going undercover at the resort as a newlywed—with another woman. As Miranda and Jake each dive into their investigations, they can’t deny their growing feelings for each other. But it’s more important than ever that they keep their attraction hidden. Especially since someone at the resort is watching them very closely, and is willing to do just about anything to keep them from uncovering the truth.

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Lucky Penny is the third book in the Miranda Vaughn mystery series. It does stand on its own but I’d  listened to Chasing the Dollar and Dropping the Dime right before this one and I was happy to be able to start Lucky Penny immediately.

Miranda Vaughn has been working for the lawyer who had represented her a few months ago when she was found not guilty on fraud and embezzlement charges. Her chosen field is finance but she is considered high risk even though she was cleared of the charges, so when she gets a chance to work in her chosen field, she jumps on it.

She and her new boss are working with the owner of Whispering Pines, a hotel on Lake Tahoe. He wants to purchase the Lucky Penny which is a casino, so his finances have to be in order. It seems that excitement tends to follow Miranda. A movie is being made at the hotel, she ends up involved with an underground gambling ring, and the FBI (aka Jake Barnes) shows up to investigate the gambling ring. Of course, the heat is turned up as soon as Jake shows up especially because he’s been so busy on out of town assignments that they still haven’t had their first date.

I like Elli Ashe’s writing style and Teri Schnaubelt’s narration skills. They make a great team! Teri Schnaubelt brings the characters to life and she has good rhythm and timing.

Lucky Penny is a humorous mystery with a bit of romance and suspense. I’m hoping there more Miranda Vaughn novels on the horizon!

Dropping the Dime (Book 2)

Miranda Vaughn was once falsely accused of stealing millions, and now she’s helping others who are facing criminal charges. While being an assistant to her former defense attorney isn’t Miranda’s dream job, she’s eager to prove herself, and her first task is a simple one – protect Kathryn, a shy CFO turned informant, and help her prove that a popular real estate developer is embezzling millions from his company. But what should be a straightforward assignment is deliciously complicated when Miranda is thrown together with FBI Agent Jake Barnes, the man who saved her life, broke her heart, and then disappeared.

Beneath the neatly plotted rows of new homes lurk dark secrets, bitter feuds and a whole lot of greed. Nothing is what it appears; even Miranda’s timid client is hiding secrets of her own. Despite her growing distrust of her client, Miranda must protect Kathryn from becoming the target of the FBI’s investigation and protect herself from the real thief – all while protecting her heart from the sexy FBI agent she can’t seem to resist.

Teaser

It had been more than half a year since I’d felt the touch of those lips, but the effect was the same. Dizzying. Electric. A tug of passion that reached from my soul. Nothing, no one, had ever made me feel like that.

“We shouldn’t do this,” I whispered.

“I know.” Jake’s voice was low and gravelly and thrilled me to the pit of my stomach.

MY REVIEW

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

The After House has a little bit of everything: historical fiction, romance, suspense, mystery, thriller, and ghosts. It begins about 300 years ago when Eli Gaspar was a whaler and his story is told throughout the book. He ends up being a ghost in the cottage that Remy Galway rents but it’s not clear until the end of the book how things turned out for him.

When Remy and her daughter Olivia move into the cottage, Olivia immediately knows that they’re not alone. Then strange things start happening and it appears that not only is the house haunted, but someone wants Remy out of the way. There’s so much going on in this book and yet the middle of it seemed to drag to me. The ending almost made up for it though.

I liked the characters of Remy, Olivia, and Eli. Hugh seemed a bit too good although I did enjoy the Hugh/Who? conversation. I would have liked his character to be developed further. Also, I was confused about who the angel and apprentice were until close to the end.

The information about whalers and whaling was interesting and I enjoyed reading about it and Eli.

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Chasing the Dollar is an adventure and mystery that is a fun read even though it is suspenseful at times.

Miranda Vaughn was arrested for fraud and embezzlement at the investment company she worked at and she was found not guilty, which she was. She was set up. Unfortunately, Miranda used all of her savings as well as her aunt’s savings for her trial and she can’t find a job because now she’s a high risk hire.

Miranda decides to try to clear her name and ends up on the adventure of her life. She also has to trust Jake Barmes, the FBI agent who had arrested her! They get to know each other and she realizes he’s not so bad while he realizes she’s not guilty. Also, to make things even more interesting, there’s a spark between them.

Chasing the Dollar never slows down. Ellie Ashe has a great writing style and the narrator, Teri Schnaubelt, does the story justice. She brings the characters to life and I look forward to listening to her narration of the next book in the series. If you like mystery/thrillers with a bit of humor, you’ll enjoy Chasing the Dollar.

I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Several lives are intertwined in this Sci Fi story and the author does a good job of weaving those lives together as time goes on.

As a young boy, Ben witnesses a “meteor” demolish his home with his parents in it and is suddenly an orphan. Nine months later, twins are born to a young woman. One is deformed and horrific looking and is whisked away by the government. The other is a normal girl who is secretly adopted by a local family. The girl is named Laura per her dying mother’s request.

Laura and her twin are part alien, have powers, and are total opposites. The twin is locked up as an experiment and resents Laura because she’s been allowed to live a normal human life.

Ben and Laura end up meeting when they’re older when they’re both searching for what, they don’t know. Maybe each other? They realize that they need to figure out where Laura came from and that they’re going to have to face her evil twin brother.

Laura is such a strong character. She handles devastation, horror, and loss but she continues to live her life. I really liked the side characters, especially Jim, Laura’s older friend who lives by the lake.

I like the narrator’s voice. he has one of those voices that is easy on the ears. He did a good job with inflection and pacing of the story.

There’s so much happening in A Human Element. It starts as Sci Fi but is also a thriller with a bit of romance. I don’t recommend this book for younger readers because of a couple steamy sex scenes as well as some violence.

Short Story Review: Environmentally Friendly by Elias Zanbaka

30 Oct

29740508

Out of seven billion people, one man has declared war on Mother Nature and plans to bring it to its knees.

Out of all the criminals in Los Angeles, he’s the number one target being hunted by the LAPD tonight.

And out of the entire LAPD, one officer is hell-bent on helping him complete his mission.

My Review

I got this story from Amazon when it was available for free.

Environmentally Friendly is very short but intense. A man has escaped from a psychiatric hospital and is waging war on Mother Nature with a flame thrower and a chainsaw. The LAPD, of course, wants to stop him but one officer wants to protect him as well by helping him to complete his perceived mission.

Even though this story is short, I really liked it. It is suspenseful and even has a twist. If you’re looking for a quick but good read, I recommend Environmentally Friendly.

Book Review: One Was Lost by Natalie D. Richards

27 Sep

Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Are they labels or a warning? The answer could cost Sera everything.

Murder, justice, and revenge were so not a part of the plan when Sera set out on her senior camping trip. After all, hiking through the woods is supposed to be safe and uneventful.

Then one morning the group wakes up groggy, confused, and with words scrawled on their wrists: Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Their supplies? Destroyed. Half their group? Gone. Their chaperone? Unconscious. Worst of all, they find four dolls acting out a murder—dolls dressed just like them.

Suddenly it’s clear; they’re being hunted. And with the only positive word on her wrist, Sera falls under suspicion…

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

One Was Lost is a young adult thriller that is full of suspense and has several twists. Sera and three of her classmates have been drugged and are being hunted. As more disturbing events occur, each person in their group comes under suspicion at some point. Somehow they need to work together to get out of the forest to safety.

Things are looking pretty desperate for Sera and her classmates. They have no supplies, one chaperone is unconscious and the other is missing, their phones have been destroyed, and they are sure that they’re being hunted but a psychopath. Natalie D. Richards does a great job of making the reader feel the pain and growing desperation of the group.

The characters are typical high school seniors, each with their own issues. I did think Sera not wanting to date because her mother abandoned the family was a bit over the top but you never know how someone is going to react to something like that in reality. Her relationship with Lucas, one of the other classmates, is sweet, although he has more patience with her than most.

Anyone who likes suspense will like One Was Lost.

Book Review: The CleanSweep Conspiracy by Chuck Waldron

14 Jun

3075153

Description

Matt Tremain publishes Verité, a modest blog dedicated to writing about the truth and exposing scams. Currently, he’s following up on rumors concerning something called CleanSweep, a mysterious project in Toronto, Canada.

Matt gets his break when a whistleblower connects CleanSweep to billionaire Charles Claussen. Claussen plans to rid Toronto of undesirables, beginning with street people and extending to any citizens who don’t match Claussen’s restrictive screening matrix.

With the help of a high-ranking government official, Claussen plans to incite riots and violent unrest, conning Torontonians into sacrificing privacy and civil liberties for illusionary security and safety. Toronto will be reduced to a repressive city-state.

The information overwhelms Matt, who doubts he has the courage, skill, or readership to take on CleanSweep. But the murder of his source convinces the blogger to take a stand—although he’s too late to prevent chaos from gripping Toronto’s streets.

To get the word out, Matt’s going to need allies. He may have found some in a Toronto police detective and a local TV reporter pursuing the same story—presuming they aren’t allied with Claussen. If they are, Matt’s going to become yet another victim of CleanSweep, and the truth will be buried forever.

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

The CleanSweep Conspiracy grabbed my interest from the first page and I found it difficult to put down. It’s full of suspense and it has an interesting and scary concept.

When Matt Tremain finds out about CleanSweep he has trouble believing it because it sounds so far-fetched. Even when he does believe, he has no clue how far Claussen is willing to go, though, to “clean up” Toronto. Matt is a wanted man and anyone who associates with him is in as much danger as he is.

The characters are believable. Matt doesn’t have much faith in himself but he ends up being very capable. Clingman, the cop who helps him, knows he’s probably going to lose his job (if not his life) but he feels he has to help Matt. Matt finds several allies along the way, many interesting.

I like Chuck Waldron’s writing style. It’s descriptive and he kept me on the edge of my seat. There were several twists along the way. I definitely recommend The Clean Sweep Conspiracy.

Book Review: Jericho by Alex Gordon

4 Jun

Jericho Book Banner

Jericho_PBTitle: Jericho

Author: Alex Gordon

Publisher: Harper Voyager

Genre: Supernatural

Format: Ecopy/Paperback

For readers of Deborah Harkness, J.D. Horn, Lev Grossman, and any supernatural thriller, a young witch must risk death and damnation to defeat a powerful ancient evil in Alex Gordon’s follow-up to the masterful debut Gideon.

In unearthing her father’s secret past, Lauren Reardon discovered a shocking truth about herself. She is a Child of Endor, a sect of witches who believe they are the guardians of the “thin places”—areas across the globe where evil can seep through the divide between the worlds separating the living and the restless dead. At any time, she can be called upon to close one of these breaches and prevent demons from infiltrating our realm. When Lauren has a disturbing vision of an Oregon forest, she is drawn back to the familiar woods of the misty Pacific Northwest to investigate.

Locals had long whispered about an abandoned logging camp known as Jericho—of the strange disappearances and eerie sounds heard in the woods deep in the night. But these ghost stories only hint at the true evil lurking within the camp’s dilapidated buildings, a primeval malevolence far more terrifying than Lauren’s darkest imaginings. And now, Lauren must face this evil, even if it takes her life . . . even if it costs her soul.

My Review

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Lauren Reardon saved the town of Gideon seven months ago and is now the Mistress of Gideon. She knows that she has been chosen to help save other towns that are guarding our realm, so when she ends up crossing into the woods of the Pacific Northwest she knows that she has to go there.

Lauren ends up at the home of a wealthy businessman who just happens to live on the mountain that Lauren needs to go to. She knows it’s not a coincidence that she was invited but the other witches there treat her as an outsider and don’t want her there. Eventually, after several incidents, they’re not threatened by her and are happy that she’s there to help.

The characters are complex and full of surprises. Lauren is a strong woman who speaks her mind and is always willing to do what needs to be done. She still has a lot to learn about what she is capable of as far as witchcraft.

Jericho is full of twists, suspense, witchcraft, horror, and mystery. I love Alex Gordon’s writing style. Jericho stands on its own but I’d recommend reading Gideon first.

About the Book

For fans of Stephen King, Iris Johansen, Dean Koontz, Sandra Brown, David Baldacci, Brad Thor, and Nora Roberts

At the height of President Jennifer Bradley’s inaugural parade, a bomb detonates, followed by shots from a sniper’s rifle. She survives despite the numerous casualties including the Chief White House photographer. The authorities apprehend the only surviving suspect, but before they can interrogate him, he dies mysteriously while recovering in the hospital.

In an effort to hunt down those responsible and prevent future assassination attempts, Special Agent Wade Masterson of the Secret Service recruits photojournalist Xandra Carrick for a dual-role position as the President’s Photographer and Clandestine Assistant Operative.

Xandra’s uncanny gift of second-sight through the lens of a camera thrusts her straight into the maw of a deadly terrorist plot that runs far deeper than anyone in the intelligence community ever imagined.

But she may already be too late.

In a tale of vengeance, honor and sacrifice, Xandra must draw upon all she has to stop an insidious plot which threatens to bring the country to its knees with a biological weapon that will decimate the nation’s population.

My Review

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Latent Image is a suspenseful thriller that is difficult to put down. It not only had me on the edge of my seat, but it had me in tears a couple times.

The main character, Xandra Carrick, has been hired to be the President of the United States’ official photographer after the previous one was killed in a terrorist attack. Xandra was chosen not only for her photography skills, but also because she has a gift. She has visions and the head of the Secret Service hopes that her visions may help keep the President safe.

Latent Image really packs a punch. There is a terrorist on the loose who has a personal vendetta against the President and he wants to take down as many U.S. citizens as he can, especially the President. Xandra finds out that he’s not the only problem. She’s told that there is a secret organization that controls global balances, the economy, and political power, and they will kill anyone who gets in their without a second thought.

This story is told so well that the character of Xandra felt like a friend by the time I got to the end. It is definitely a must read for anyone who likes thrillers.
