Sea-God at Sunrise by G.L. Tysk is an historical fiction novel inspired by the true story of John Manjiro, one of the first Japanese in America and later interpreter to the shogun, “The Sea-God at Sunrise” is a tale of friendship and forgiveness across two cultures at the height of America’s Golden Age of Whaling.x
Review:
The Sea-God at Sunrise reads like a classic. It is nautical and historical fiction at its best. G.L.Tysk is knowledgeable of Japanese culture as well as the art of whaling. She takes you on a sea adventure and, even though I know nothing about the sea or whaling, I was able to follow and understand what was going on on the ship. If you like historical fiction and/or nautical fiction, you will definitely enjoy this book. Available on Amazon or Sleepygirl’s. The rest of my review can be found here.

About the Author: G.L. Tysk was born in Chicago to Hong Kong immigrants. She tried her hand at a variety of careers, including graphic design and librarianship. While working at a local library, she discovered Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. That book changed her life, leading her to write this novel .

Bootlicker by Steve Piacente is a political thriller. In the summer of 1959, two black teens hoping to sneak a beer in the South Carolina woods stumble on a Klan lynching led by the local judge. One bolts. The other freezes and winds up with a choice: join the man about to die, or begin hustling black support the judge needs to advance in politics. In trade, he will enjoy a life of power and comfort. Decades later, Big Ike is about to become the state’s first black congressman since Reconstruction. Instead, he finds himself in the same forest, a long rope in his fist, muttering the hated nickname again and again: Bootlicker.x

Bootlicker keeps your interest from the beginning. The characters are compelling. Ike is a guilt-ridden rising politician being covered by Dan, an ambitious reporter with the Charleston Herald-Leader. Both of the characters are realistic and it’s easy to understand why they do the things they do. Bootlicker is an interesting story that I highly recommend, especially if you like political thrillers. Available on Barnes and Noble or Amazon. The rest of this review can be found here.
