Review
I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.
From the Magical Mind of Mindy Munson is a children’s book that deals with some serious issues in a creative way. It is well written and easy for young readers to follow.
The Munson children lost their parents in an accident 3 years ago. Using this event, Nikki Bennett does a good job of showing how different people deal with grief from the same event in different ways. Susie, the oldest Munson and the narrator, feels responsible for the other children and is resistant to change. Tucker has anger issues. The twins, Mindy and Jesse, have a special bond as many twins do but Mindy hasn’t spoken since the day of accident – except to Jesse. Despite their issues, they are all good kids.
What makes this book intriguing for children is Mindy. According to her, there are other creatures in their house and yard that adults, and even older children, can’t see. Her brothers and sister believe her without question. An adult, of course would think she just has an overactive imagination. As the story continues, however, even an adult would have to start to believe that maybe, just maybe, it’s not just Mindy’s imagination.
From the Mind of Mindy Munson is a delightful children’s book that will stimulate the imagination while showing that happiness can be found even after a terrible loss.
