Seventeen-year-old Crystal White is the new girl on Starfish Island. Dragged to the remote community by her environmental activist father, she is eager to find fun that doesn’t involve touching fish guts or listening to local folklore.
During a midnight swim with some new friends, Crystal is pulled out to sea by the waves. Convinced she’s going to drown; Crystal is rescued by Llyr, a handsome stranger. As she searches for him in the following weeks, she finds there may be more truth to the Starfish legends than she thought.
Over a sizzling rollercoaster summer, Llyr introduces Crystal to magic she’d only ever dreamed of. But as Crystal comes to love Starfish Island, it begins to drive her family apart. A nearby power plant is devastating local marine life, and her parents are stuck in the middle. As the magic and mundane parts of Crystal’s life converge, she finds herself risking everything to save Llyr, her family and herself.

My Review
I chose to read this e-book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
A Thousand Salt Kisses starts with Crystal White, the new girl, attending a beach party with her first and only friend. There are a lot of people attending the party, including several good-looking guys and, of course, there’s quite a bit of drinking. Crystal ends up swimming too far out into the ocean while looking for her friend, Rosie and isn’t able to get back to shore. She’s sure that she is going to drown until she is saved by Llyr who ends up being a merman.
Josie Demuth’s writing flows well and this is a quick and easy read. While she does go into a little description of the world of the merfolk, I would have loved if Crystal would have been able, somehow, to see their world. I also enjoyed reading about how the merfolk came to be.
The characters and their relationships are a little unbelievable. Llyr is the perfect man, or merman, and he and Crystal instantly fall in love even though she is 17 years old and he is over 300 years old. Another couple also fall instantly in love when they are introduced, their common factor being that they hate Crystal. The minute they’re together, however, they both think Crystal is great. The relationship between Crystal’s parents is more realistic, unfortunately, and I was so afraid for Crystal that they weren’t going to be able to work things out.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book, A Thousand Salt Kisses Later. I want to find out what happens with several of the characters, not just Crystal and Llyr, but George the fisherman and Llyr’s wife.
