Young. Unproven. The future rests on her shoulders.
Her birth served only one purpose-to propel the Sisterhood one step closer to the ninth daughter. The prophecy is clear: .” . . and the ninth daughter of the ninth daughter shall restore balance to the land and bring an end to the rise of the Shadow.”
Kahu Uira Hawthorn is the eighth daughter-the stepping stone, not the solution.
She grew up in the midst of powerful witches and skilled healers. Her mother, Kapowai, is the High Priestess of the Grand Coven of the Sacred Wood and a venerated leader.
When the time comes, Kahu will inherit the wand and become the High Priestess of all Aotearoa, a destiny bound to her the moment she drew her first breath. She may prove to be a wise and powerful leader, but her legacy will be judged by only one measure. Did she deliver the child of prophecy?

My Review
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
I’ve read the first 4 books in this series and enjoyed this prequel that explains in more depth how Flynn’s mother, Kahu, got pregnant with Flynn. It would be a good book to start the series with, but it also is a good addition at any point of reading the series.
Kahu is the eighth daughter and the only reason for her being is to bear the ninth daughter and to be the leader of her people until the ninth daughter takes over. Unfortunately, bearing a daughter does not come easily for the poor girl. The Courage of Kahu describes everything she went through to finally bring Flynn into this world.
I love this series as well as Rue’s writing. She’s one of my favorite authors. If you don’t like fantasy, she also writes adult fiction (The Lake Effect series).
I liked this novella as an addition to the series. I’m getting ready to read the next two books and thought I’d check this out first. I’m glad I did.

Rue is an award-winning fiction author and in her limited spare time, she reads voraciously. Her love of the written word led to the pursuit of a B.A. in Journalism from Pepperdine University in California and a lifelong passion for writing. Her respect for indigenous cultures, oral traditions, and the seasonal magick of nature inevitably brought her work to the world of fantasy. The story of Flynn Hawthorn has been part of her heart and imagination for nearly a decade.
