Autobiographical in nature, these poems are memories and musings from the author’s life. When he was a teenager, DeHart began writing and publishing. Some years ago, that desire dwindled. Then, about five years ago, his love of words was rekindled.

 

 

My Review

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

A Five-Year Journey is full of poems that are observations and experiences of the author. Some of the poems are simple, some are a little more complex. Some of the poems were okay but I really liked others. This is one of my favorites:

Collector’s Items

They lined the shelves,
these tiny icons of childhood
from which I constructed stories.

I moved their joints and swiveling
features to fashion scenes after the films I had seen,
the books I had read,

until the day came when wielding
plastic no longer made sense.
No one else my age still played
with toys.

So I put the toys away and started
playing with words.
I collect them in journals,
often
the first part of a process:
words I like,
words that sound
interesting.

Bits of material that can be formed
together like clay with other bits.
