I can honestly say that I’ve never read another book like this, and I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come. I love mysteries, I thought I had read every type of mystery, and then, enter ‘Dark River’ by Avery Jenkins. This book was atmospheric, it was unique and it was stunning in its employment of words, imagery and metaphysical. I loved every second and I so wanted to keep reading when it ended.

Asa Cire is a gray market dealer. He claims that, when people ask him what he does for a living, he says he “sells stuff.” Which is true. He obtains things like historical texts, manuscripts, mechanical devices, etc. all of which could be counted as antiques and some of which could be counted as illegal in some countries. Then he resells them to collectors. Asa does enough business that he owns a shop where he employs a sassy, street-smart young woman named Neveah.

All of this is going quite well for Asa until one day, when he is meditating, he has a strange vision of a young girl. In this vision, the girl is dead but still screaming out for help. The vision is so real that Asa remembers it vividly and the next day, when he is visiting a friend who runs the local historical society, he discovers that the girl was murdered 20 years earlier. Asa decides to take up the girl’s cold case to find out why her spirit was calling to him of all people and the case ends up getting complicated, involving a strange manuscript and an illegal Chinese artifacts dealer.

The ending is unexpected and Asa must cope with consequences beyond what he was expecting in this genre-bending story. This is definitely not one to miss if you love a good mystery!

About the Author

Dr. Avery Jenkins is a former award-winning journalist and essayist who took a 25-year break from the writing world to become a chiropractor and acupuncturist. He holds a 2nd degree black belt in the martial art of aikido and is in his final year of training to become a Daoist priest.

Dr. Jenkins lives in northwest Connecticut with his wife and two dogs of uncertain temperament. Dark River is his first novel.
